The North Allegheny Summer Academy
Developed to provide youngsters in grades Kindergarten through Grade 5
a variety of academic and cultural experiences.
The objective of the Academy is to provide the students with
opportunities that will stimulate, enrich, and expand their interests and talents.
The workshops will be directed and supervised by experienced educators
of the North Allegheny School District and surrounding Districts.
All workshops will be held at Peebles Elementary School.
This year North Allegheny Summer Academy will have a Beach Vacation theme. Many days
will be filled with academic and cultural activities.
The following class listings are offered as our vacation specialties. Please review the
outstanding classes taught by our Summer Academy instructors.
COOKING
Sail into Cooking
Grades K-5
Sail away with us to the most beautiful beach and food destinations on earth! While on
this food festival around the world, students will experience main dishes, appetizers,
snacks and desserts from the glorious beaches of New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Brazil,
Croatia, and the Philippines. This action-packed class integrates science, social studies,
geography, art, and writing along with cooking methods, safety in the kitchen, garnishing
techniques and FUN!

ARTS AND CRAFTS
Under the Sea, on the Island – Come Create with Us
Grades K-5
Vacation with us as we explore fascinating island and ocean life! We will create a clay
seashell necklace and a 3-D ceramic sea serpent, print ships on a tissue collage ocean
background, and construct a paper mâché fish. But wait, there’s more! We will invent a
miniature island scene with sculpy clay details, decorate a wooden treasure chest (what will
you hid inside?), and depict the coral reef on our stuffed fabric pillow. So—all aboard as
we set said for wonderful adventures with fabulous, fun-filled art projects!

Around the World in 10 Days
Grades 1-5
Travel around the world with us as we play games, taste food and make crafts from different countries.
We will make sushi and origami from Japan, Chinese paper lanterns, tissue paper leis from Hawaii,
papier-mâché from France and add many more exciting adventures to our passports.

Take something old and create something new! Learn about recycling and saving materials while you
remake useful projects. Update paintings and design unique folders from cereal boxes and much more.

challenges in

outplay and have fun with your fellow classmates in this one of a
themed game. All Survivor participants will compete in
different subject areas to solve problems, puzzles, and hunts.

READING
Reading Adventures
Grades K-2
Come with us as we take adventures into the colorful worlds of Eric Carle, Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss,
fairy tales and folktales. We will make the books come to life through games and crafts! There will also
be some surprises along the way.

Ride the Waves through a Reading Adventure
Grades K-5
Come sail away on an amazing reading adventure with Mrs. Genes and Mrs. Marnich. We will begin our
journey by reading and interacting with fun and exciting books. Our voyage continues with
comprehension crafts, outdoor scavenger hunts, and sidewalk chalk-paint. We will have a splashing good
time with water as we fish for words, race through the spraying surf to create sentences, and dive
through hoops to make stories. Finally, we will come back ashore for some beach volleyball spelling,
hunting for shells to sequence, and writing in the sand. With two captains (teachers) leading this
adventure, we will be able to meet the needs of all crew members.

Read It, Write It, Craft It
Grades 1-3
Its summer time and time for fun. Kick back and come enjoy a morning filled with a
good book and a great craft. Students will enjoy a teacher read aloud and then use their
creativity to craft colorful characters like Tacky the Penguin, Jimmy and His Boa, Chester
Raccoon and many more. Kids will read a little, write a little, and craft a lot! It’s sure to
be fun!

American Girl Dolls

Imagine living in the past, making rag dolls, fans, flowers, sachets, and bonnets. You can take a peek into
the past through these American Girl Dolls and enjoy each of these activities. In this class, we will also
create a handbook and learn about each doll’s life and the challenges they faced. These dolls represent
strong, courageous, and helping girls, just like today’s girls. Join the class, have fun, and make history
come alive! *You do not need to own an American Girl Doll to join this class.

Bring Books to Life with Dr. Seuss!!
Grades 2-4
Bring books to life with Dr. Seuss!! Explore children’s literature through drama art, and creative writing.
Literature will incorporate the use of technology, as well as fun exciting themes that will leave you
wanting more. Not only will you learn about Dr. Seuss, but you will get the chance to become the
author/illustrator of your own “Seuss-esque” style book by camp’s end!!

Super Scientists
Grades K-1
A terrific scientific journey for students grades K-2! We will be making pickles, shooting bottle
rockets, creating shrinky dinks, and will even try to make raisins dance! Get ready for all sorts of
experiments and fun! Learn how to make gak, do tricks with magnets, and even make and eat your own
home-made ice cream! There’s lots of fun in store for our little scientists!

Calling all junior scientists! Do you like ice cream? How about launching marshmallows down the hallway?
Do you think water bottle rockets would be fun to shoot up in the air on the playground? Then this is
the class for you! Attend the “Wacky Science” workshop as we learn the science behind making ice
cream, paper airplanes, marshmallow catapults, bubbles of all sizes, slime, edible rock crystals, water
bottle rockets, and much more! Come join us for some messy excitement!

CREATIVE THEATER
Disney through the Decades
Grades 2-5
Do you like to sing and dance? Have you ever wanted to perform for your friends and family? Do you
like to have FUN? Then we have the class just for you! Come join us as we enter the magical world of
Disney with a theater workshop designed for a great time. This exciting workshop includes theater
games, improvisation fun, characterization techniques, and stage speaking lessons and activities. We will
focus on building confidence and self-esteem as well as we have FUN expressing our creativity and
imagination on stage. With a focus on teamwork, students of all ability and comfort levels will have the
opportunity to encounter the art of a live theater experience while enjoying the excitement of the
wonderful world of Disney. We’re ready to sing, dance, and laugh our way to a great time!

SPORTS AND FITNESS
Let’s Get Ready to Rumble
Grades K-5
We are looking for students in grades K through 5 who are interested in different sports. Have you
ever dreamed of becoming an athlete, but was not sure what sport to play? During the two weeks you
will learn how to play a number of different sports, how to keep your body healthy, and the meaning of
teamwork. Come show off your dribbling, passing, and shooting skills with both soccer and basketball.
The adventurous athlete will also get a chance to play a tremendous game of kickball. In addition you will
learn, practice, and play other sports such as football and floor hockey. During the two weeks you will be
given the opportunity to try many different sports and to see which ones you like best. Just Do It,
sign up for sports!

HEY…………LOOK OUT FOR THAT FRISBEE………I GOT IT!!! Come join in the Sports Spectacular fun
which will include Ultimate Frisbee and many more exciting outdoor games. How about Kickball or Beach
Ball dodge ball or Beach Ball Volleyball? Be sure to sign up for these exciting activities that will promote
social and fitness fun. The more players the better, see you in the end zone – the ultimate Frisbee end
zone of course!!!

Beach Bash Learning
(Qualified IEP Students ONLY)

Come and be a beach bum! Join us on NA Island for the biggest beach party of Summer 2013. Together
we will enhance our summer learning through creative activities while practicing reading vocabulary,
comprehension, interactive communication, and math problem solving skills. This class is designed for
students currently in grades K-5 with an existing IEP for academics and/or speech and language,
focusing on improving social, reading, writing, and math skills! Get ready to have some fun in the sun!
