Cell Structure Mind Map Biology Name: _______________________________ Period: __________________ Due Date: ______________ Cell Structures Mind Map **YOU are responsible for having the assignment completed and turned in correctly according to teacher directions on the due date.** (If you work diligently, this project can be completed in the time allotted in class.) Objective: The purpose of this lab is to better understand the functions of the various organelles in a typical cell. You will decide upon a theme for your cell and explain how each organelle plays a role in that theme. Directions: 1. Decide upon a theme for your cell. Once you have chosen a theme (each theme can only be used once per class period), sign up for it on the Promethean board. 2. Decide if you want your mind map to represent a plant or an animal cell. 3. Using a computer, find pictures that represent the job of each organelle in your cell theme (not a picture of the actual organelle). 4. Using GoogleDocs (create a presentation), create a word-processed mind map that shows a picture representing the job of each organelle in your cell theme as well as a written explanation of why the organelle represents that part of your theme. See the example below for details. 5. Include at a title slide with your theme (as described in the example), animal or plant cell, and your name and class period. Create one slide for each part of the cell you need to include. 6. Submit your presentation via the form on your class website. Submit the directions sheet with completed peer review to the turn-in bin when you are ready for your project to be graded. Example: The animal cell is like a school because… The golgi apparatus is like the TV studio of the school because the golgi apparatus packages and secretes important products just as the TV studio packages and releases important school information through channel 3 The nucleus is like the main office of the school because… etc. 7. In your mind map, include ALL of the following parts that are applicable to a plant cell or an animal cell: Organelles to include for both types of cells are: cell membrane mitochondria nucleus ribosome nucleolus endoplasmic reticulum Organelles specific to animal or plant cells: Animal cell: cilia or flagella Plant cell: cell wall, chloroplasts golgi apparatus vacuole lysosome Cell Structure Mind Map Biology Cell Structures Mind Map Grading Rubric and Peer Review My name: _________________________________________ Period: ___________ Name of partner who peer-reviewed my mind map: _____________________________ My Score Points Possible Description 2 Title slide includes name, period, theme, and animal or plant cell. 10 All necessary organelles (for plant or animal cell) included (You are responsible for deciding which organelles are necessary to include for your cell type.) 1 All organelles are part of the theme 10 Correct description of each organelle’s role in the cell and theme/ role in the theme makes sense 5 Appropriate picture included for each organelle’s role in the theme 5 Neat, organized, easy to read, and word-processed (complete sentences!) 2 Peer review completed. 35 total points MY TOTAL SCORE Peer reviewer: Name and describe 2 ways that the presentation could be improved.
