European Holiday Project Objective:

European Holiday Project

Objective: The ultimate goal of this assignment is to gain a greater understanding of what modern

European nations deem significant in their history. You are to choose a national holiday (or a smaller local celebration) from a European country and determine what it is all about. The history of the

event, not the celebration of the holiday, is our main focus. Your findings shall be presented in essay form along with a nice fluffy poster to decorate the walls of Mr. Winschel’s classroom. You should follow the ensuing format. Good Luck!

The format below provides a basic framework for your essay. The order of paragraphs may be altered if you deem it necessary. While you are permitted flexibility in this regard, the information indicated below is required.

Introduction (#1): An introductory paragraph should catch the attention of the reader and explain what is forthcoming.

Item #2: General information about the celebration in the modern European country.

 Date(s)

 Activities surrounding the celebration

 Location where celebrated if not everywhere

 Etc.

Item #3: Historical event that is being celebrated and the immediate context in which it occurred.

 Description of event

 When it happened

 Major people involved

 Why it happened

 Local historical background to the event

 Etc.

Item #4: Larger context (European-wide) of the event.

 Is this event part of a larger movement (e.g. Reformation, revolutions, etc.) across Europe?

 What other major things (events or trends such as the Enlightenment) are occurring in Europe at this time? In general these should be events that are somehow related to your topic.

 Etc.

Item #5: Significance of event.

 What were the consequences/ramifications of the event?

 What about this event makes it worthy of celebration? What makes it outstanding?

 Etc.

Conclusion (#6): Wrap up your essay with a brief conclusion.

Poster: You should have a poster to go along with your essay. There is no specific format for the poster. It should simply indicate in an attractive manner something having to do with this celebration.

For example, you might have a collage of pictures of the event itself, maps, pictures of announcements of the celebration, pictures of people involved. The name and date of the holiday and the country should be clearly indicated somewhere on the poster. A few captions are also required. If time permits, you will present your poster to the class.

Topics List

Your subject for this research project may come from the following list of holidays, or it may be something else of your choosing as long as it has been approved by the teacher. You may also choose to do a significant event that you feel deserves a holiday (perhaps an epic battle that drastically changed the course of history). In that case, see the teacher for approval and options.
