Teacher: Frau Gustavsen
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Students will build on the grammar, vocabulary, and communicative
language skills acquired in German 1 and 2. They will gain more detailed knowledge about key
historical events in Germany and the other German-speaking countries and develop more distinct
viewpoints about the target cultures.
COURSE CONTENT: Students will strengthen their conversation skills in an expanded range of
contexts and will be able to understand and interpret more complex spoken and written texts. All
four language skills (speaking, reading, writing, and listening) will be developed equally.
Grammatical structures and speech elements will be presented and exercised in the context of
communicative tasks. In addition to the present, present and past perfect, simple past and future
verb tenses, students will also use the passive voice and present and past subjunctive II mood.
German 3 includes chapters 1-6 in the text.
TEXTBOOK: Komm mit! Level 3
Each student of the class will be assigned a textbook which has to be returned at the end of the
school year. The students are asked to take good care of the book. Writing in the book is not
permitted.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
-notebook,
-ring binder (recommended) or pocket folder for worksheets
-pencil/pen
Even though not required, it is highly recommended to purchase a basic GermanEnglish/English-German dictionary, such as Barron's German-English Dictionary: Wörterbuch

METHODS OF ASSESSMENT
1. Tests/Quizzes:
-All tests will be announced.
-Quizzes will be both announced and unannounced. There will/can be both individual
and group quizzes.
-tests are after completion of each chapter and are split into two days.
Dishonest work, such as the use of a cellular phone during an assessment, will lead to a
zero grade for any assessment.
Tests and quizzes may be made up only with a legitimate excuse and must be made up
within a week. If the student was only absent the day of the test or quiz, they will be
required to make it up on the day that they return. Tests and quizzes won’t be returned
until all students intending to make them up have completed them. It is the student’s
responsibility to schedule a time to complete any make-up work..
2. Graded in-class work:
-Work completed in class will be graded.
3. Graded homework:
Homework turned in late will receive half credit with an attached excuse form.
(Excused absences won’t count as late days.)
I WOULD LIKE TO EMPHASIZE THE LATE POLICY. IF AN ASSIGNMENT IS NOT
TURNED IN AT THE START OF CLASS, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED LATE. IT CAN
RECEIVE HALF CREDIT FOR COMPLETION BY CLASSTIME THE NEXT DAY.
4. Participation: At the end of each grading period students will receive points towards
their grade for class participation (being attentive, offering answers, contributing to
group work, using German). Students will do a self-evaluation of their participation,
which I will take into consideration for the grade. It is based on a rubric.
GRADING
According to district policies. A: 100-90%, B: 89-80%, C: 79-70%, D: 69-60%, E: below
60%.

Student grades will be posted as soon as possible depending on the length of the
assignment. Please monitor Tyler often so that parents and students will be aware of the
student’s grade at any time.
GUIDELINES/ BEHAVIOR
Classroom expectations include promptness, readiness to work, and respect for self, for others,
and for the learning environment.
All facets of the NA Code of Conduct apply to this class.
Learning a language requires not only an openness and interest for the target language and
culture, but also serious preparation and studying. Completing assignments on-time and
thoroughly, and preparing well for the class are necessary for your success and are expected.
Our language class will be conducted in an open and friendly atmosphere. Students should feel
free to try out the newly-learned language patterns and to voice their opinions and ideas. Any
student attempt to disturb this atmosphere would be unacceptable.
