Taste the Rainbow Tour

Your child is able to participate in tasting a variety of Fruits and Vegetables as a part of the BWE

Taste the Rainbow Tour on Wednesday, October 28, 2015 . During lunch we will be encouraging your child to try individual samples of red apples, orange carrots, yellow bananas, green broccoli, and purple grapes. Please contact the school office if you do not permit your child to have any of the above foods.

Eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables allows our bodies to get the nutrition it needs to stay healthy. It can also help to reduce the risks of certain diseases and certain forms of cancers. Think about the colors you put on your plate when preparing meals and snacks. The more colors you add, the more nutrients. Vary your veggies and focus on fruit!

Red apples are fat free, sodium free, cholesterol free and a high source of dietary fiber. One medium apple provides almost 20% of the daily recommended amount of fiber.

Carrots are fat free, low sodium, and cholesterol free. They are an excellent source of vitamins A, and C, and they are low in calories. One-half cup of baby carrots provides more than a day’s worth of vitamin A.

Bananas are fat-free, sodium-free, and cholesterol-free. They are a good source of fiber, vitamin

C, and potassium. Potassium is a mineral that helps the muscles work. Bananas are a popular fruit consumed by athletes.

Broccoli is low-fat, low-sodium, and cholesterol-free. Apart from being one of the richest sources of calcium, it also contains vitamins A, B6, C and K. It is also very rich in dietary fiber, potassium, and manganese. Broccoli is very nutrient rich.

Purple grapes are low-fat, low-sodium, and low-cholesterol. They are rich in vitamin C and vitamin

K. Grapes contain flavonoids, powerful antioxidants that give grapes their vibrant purple color.

Thank you for the opportunity to work with your children and educate them on the importance of fruits and vegetables! Please continue to encourage your children to taste new fruits and vegetables by taking them to the grocery store or even a farmer’s market to allow them to select something new to try.
