Course Description
Career Internship is a one-semester career exploration course designed for students who
are interested in gaining field experience in a potential career area. The course design
requires students to work outside the school with local elementary and middle schools,
businesses, and organizations while receiving school credit for work and participation.
Career Internship will be assigned to a student’s schedule 8th hour and continue outside of
the normal school day. It is recommended this course be taken in a semester free of
extra-curricular involvement or limited involvement.

Course Objectives
 To have an understanding of your chosen career interest.
 To perform, to some extent, duties that the career entails.
 To aid the Internship Supervisor in various tasks.
 To complete the agreed upon number of required work hours for credit.
 To learn to work well with those in their chosen career.
Homework
 Students are responsible for completing the required amount of hours.
i. 90 total hours (minimum 6 hours a week, each week of the semester)
ii. Your supervisor, along with you, must keep an account of your hours. I
will request these sheets randomly throughout the semester.
 Students will be responsible for a one-page journal entry every 2-3 weeks.
 Students will complete and present a multi-media project at the end of the
semester summarizing their experience (final exam).
Grading
(I-level)
 Hour completion –
450 pts (total of 15 wks, not including breaks)
(Minimum 6 hrs. per week = 30 pts/week – 5 pts each hr)
 Journals –
100 pts
 Internship Evaluations –
270 pts (90 pts each)
(6, 12, and final semester)
 Multi-media presentation 100 pts
(20% of grade)
**If you do not complete the required amount of hours you will
automatically fail! (0 points!)
Responsibilities
Intern










Set up and participate in an interview with the Supervisor
Develop learning goals and responsibilities and a time schedule with
the supervisor (schedule to continue throughout the entire semester).
Agree to the learning objectives and expectations of the course and
site.
Report to the Internship site for the agreed upon dates and times.
Adhere and be subject to the rules and regulations of the WNHS
Attendance and Tardy and Dress Code policies. Intern must call
Internship Supervisor and advise of Intern’s absence before scheduled
time of arrival.
Demonstrate the following: responsibility, self-esteem, sociability,
self-management, integrity, honesty and respectability.
Develop the ability to think creatively, make decisions and problem
solve.
Complete a weekly time sheet and journals (topics to be assigned).
Complete the agreed upon number of required work hours for credit.
Act in an appropriate manner, as a representative of the Wheaton
North High School Career Internship Program.
Internship Supervisor
 Serve in the general capacity as a supervisor and mentor for the Intern.
 Develop, direct and supervise the responsibilities given to the Intern.
 Evaluate the performance of the Intern at the 6th, 12th, and 18th week of
the semester.
 Attempt to help each Intern attain a measure of success in the
Internship Program.
 Work in collaboration with the Intern to participate in experiences that
will help foster a positive and beneficial experience for all involved.
 Allow for a variety of different activities to be experienced for a wellrounded internship (the more hands-on activities vs. simple
observation, the better if possible).
 Contact the Internship Coordinator with questions or concerns.
 Keep an account of intern’s hours that can be accessed by the intern
and the coordinator.
 Sign off on all weekly intern hour sheets to verify time spent at site.
