3/24/16 Math Please help your child remember that 2K-ites have homework over the break. Pick 4 days to practice subtraction. We have been working very hard to master double-digit subtraction. Everyone has been doing a great job understanding the steps it takes to subtract the subtrahend (the number being subtracted) from the minuend (the number being subtracted from). At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I must say it one more time, we do not teach subtraction the way you learned it. We no longer teach the algorithm to “borrow” from the larger place. Please DO NOT try to be helpful by teaching them this “trick”. It will only prove to confuse your child. You will notice that if your child has not yet mastered the basic facts, this work is a bit more tedious. Please practice with the basic facts as often as possible. See the attached strategies for coaching help. Pencils Thank you so much for the donated pencils. We received quite a few. I am hopeful we have enough to get us through to the end of the school year. News from 2K Dates to Remember March 25 – April 1 – Spring Break April 4 – Classes resume, Spring Break math homework due Reading We have been studying the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., along with polishing our comparing and contrasting skills. We have read several books about this influential man. I am sure your second graders have come home talking about the unjust laws that were in place not that many years ago. Writing Along with creating fun fiction and poetry, we will be working on writing great expository paragraphs after the break. We will be using our new knowledge of Martin Luther King Jr. to write the expository papers. Tutorials Take a look at the class web page to view tutorials for the double digit addition and subtraction strategies your child has been taught. As I have stated several times, please do not teach your child the algorithms we learned as children. 3/24/16 April Reading Log The April reading log will be passed out on April 4. If you are at the library over break and your 2K-ite wants to get a start on his/her April reading. The requirements this month are: 2 chapter books, 1 biography, and 1 other book of choice. In April we will celebrate our great reading with a beach party. The book report will be based on the biography. Junior Achievement We have a Junior Achievement representative visiting our class for several weeks in April. Junior Achievement USA is a nonprofit organization financed by businesses, foundations, government, and individuals. Through hands-on classroom activities, JA introduces early elementary students to the importance of productive citizens within a community. It is a volunteer based program and we are very lucky to have Mr. Martzel volunteering to teach us all how to be a productive citizens in our community. Ask your child: What did you learn at the Health and Safety Fair? What is segregation? Was Charlie Bucket a nice boy? Happy Spring!
