Reading -4th grade
The fourth graders have just completed the story “The
Ladybug Wins the Contest.” This was an ongoing story in
the SRA Decoding Strategies, research-based reading
materials we often use. A couple of students were
successful inferring within this story. Discerning the main
idea- as opposed to details, is a key focus of our work.
We have just started some targeted reading
comprehension and fluency lessons using non-fiction
materials which the kids love! We just finished Gold
Mining!

This program helps below-level students with phonic
recognition and comprehension.
Reading- 5th grade– large Reading Group
The fifth graders in this group have just finished working
on some fiction materials using the SRA Decoding books,
and are now moving to non-fiction materials, which the
kids are craving!
Writing -4th grade
The fourth graders have finished opinion pieces on a selfchosen topic about which each is passionate.
We are now beginning to write for the 2015 PTA
Reflections contest topic of “Let Your Imaginations Fly!”
You may notice them writing a lot more at home!
Writing -5th grade
The fifth grade team has also just begun brainstorming for
the “Let Your Imagination Fly” PTA Reflections Contest this
year! They are keeping a “dream journal” to help them
come up with writing ideas which will really take flight!
You will be receiving details in your child’s “Lopushonsky
folder” in a week or so.
I am enjoying my membership on the Special

Dear Parents,
Please take the opportunity to listen to your child read
orally. Then ask them questions about what they read to
hear how well they comprehend the passage. The more
your child is reads AT HIS/HER “JUST RIGHT” LEVEL, the
stronger reader s/he will become! Each student knows his
or her own level- just ask them!
* “Just right" reading level is determined by having a child
read one page in their book. If they stumble on anywhere
from 3-4 words, that book is JUST RIGHT for them; 1-2 is
too easy and 5 or more is too hard.
