CREATIVE CHALLENGE

Work in a small production team to create a 30-second Public Service announcement

(PSA). This may be humorous and entertaining, or be serious with an emotional appeal. Choose one of the following themes:

“Keep It Positive” [or another name of your choice]

This PSA should focus on creating a positive atmosphere at WNHS. It may address ways to handle situations when people are negative at school, whether it’s a verbal comment you hear about someone else, or something that you receive in a text or on social media. The winning PSA may be shown to Access classes.

“Be Present” [or another name of your choice]

This PSA should encourage students to have a balance in their use of technology; to be present with each other as opposed to staring at the screens of their phones, even when they are hanging out together in person. The inspiration from this comes from a YouTube video: “Look Up”, and one of the responses, “Look Down”. The winning

PSA may be shown to Access classes.

Learning Experience

This assignment will help students better understand the roles of proposals, scripts, and storyboards. It will also strengthen their communication skills, as well as planning, video composition, and editing skills. Additionally, students will divide crew responsibilities during all phases of production, and create their finished piece as part of a production team.

Process

NOTE: All documents should be set up as GoogleDocs that are shared with all

members of the team (storyboards may be hand-written).

1.

Brainstorm and select an strategy for telling your story. You may want to create a rough outline or sequence of scenes.

You’ll have 2-DAYS to create your IDEA, which you will type up as a treatment, and present to the class. This is your initial PITCH.

2.

Divide crew responsibilities and use the Google Doc that lists who is doing what: use first names, followed by each person’s roles/responsibilities during preproduction, production and post-production.

PRE-PRODUCTION (5 days)

3.

Write a treatment of the selected strategy

4.

Write a complete script that everyone has input on.

5.

Storyboard EVERY SHOT (even if there’s no dialog or voiceover); including scene description, camera movement notes (zoom, pan, tilt, dolly, truck), timing estimate, and exact audio that accompanies each shot (dialog or voiceover)

6.

Create a shot sheet to plan your shooting.

7.

Create a props list

8.

Create a shooting schedule to plan your production days during 3rd.
