Purpose: The Patron of the Arts assignment is designed for WWS music students to experience and reflect
upon an artistic event in order to promote a life-long appreciation for the arts.
Assignment: Each music student is expected to attend artistic performances (HS level or above) in which
he/she does not perform per semester. (1 performance) for non-audition or performing ensembles
(2 performances) for auditioned ensembles.
The assignment includes the following:
1. Attend an artistic event. This event may be a professional, college or HS event where one of the fine
arts are performed or represented (Examples: concert featuring classical, jazz, world music, or a
dramatic production.) Other artistic events must be approved by the teacher before attending in
order to receive full credit.
2. Due within 2 weeks of performance. In order to keep performance fresh in your mind and to
receive full credit.
3. Provide a copy of program or ticket. To be used as proof of attendance or print up documentation
from the internet.
4. Assignment must be typed, font no larger than 12, a minimum of one page, double spaced,
margins 1” and attached to this sheet. You may print your review on the back of this sheet. Please
include the following in paragraph form:
 Write a brief introduction describing the event you attended. (Who, what, when, where, why)
 Describe the mood of the pieces you heard. What artistic elements contributed to this and how
(dynamics, phrasing, character/story, color, mood, etc).
 Describe your favorite piece or part of the program.
 How can you relate this performance to something we have talked about in class? (Use musical
vocabulary or concepts - melody, harmony, dynamics, character/story, color, mood)
 Be sure to attach Patron of the Arts typed paper and program or ticket stub to this paper.
Grading:

__________ /10 – Typed
__________ /20 – Questions answered clearly with reflection and thought using above mentioned
vocabulary.
