Amy Norton's Newsletter and Plans January 11, 2016 The kids were really glad to be back at school after our break! They were very excited about our Brown Bear Brown Bear story and activities. They worked really hard to prepare the class books that each child will get a turn to bring home. Read the book with your child and have them fill in part of the phrase or the end part of the phrase, i.e. “what do you ____(see)?”; “I see a red ________, looking at ____.” The vocabulary that we focused on were the names of the animals and the colors. On Thursday during our gym time, our class participated in the WDSRA activities. The kids went through obstacle courses that included jumping, hopping, going through a tunnel, going over a bar, and going under a bridge. We will be participating in WDSRA activities every Thursday. Other skills that will be addressed include kicking, throwing, and catching. Our new theme centers on the clothing that we need to wear to stay warm in the winter. There is a great song that we will use, along with someone dressing up using the real clothing items. We will also talk about where the items of clothing are worn and how they protect us against the cold. Our vocabulary will include hat, scarf, sweater, coat, mittens, gloves, snow pants, boots, and cold. We will talk about the fact that mittens and gloves are a matching pair and we will do matching and sorting activities. We have a set of mittens that have numerals on them that will be paired with mittens that have a certain number of dots on them. We are working really hard on counting with 1:1 correspondence, saying one number for each item counted and to stop counting when there are no more items. You can help your child practice this skill at home during functional routines such as setting the table, sorting laundry, or while cleaning up toys.
