ERF Shared Reading Checklist
1. Introduce new book to ½ of the class at a time. You may follow OWL curricular guidelines, add a
“picture walk” and/or add the “Magnificient 7” listed below depending on your children’s attention span
length.
2. New and familiar books should be shared at least twice daily with ALL children.
3. New and familiar books should be shared at least one other time each day for a total of at least 3 times
with children whose PPVT Standard Scores fall below the 85th percentile:
4. For additional shared readings with children below 85th percentile:
a. 3-4 children, no more than 2 who are below the 85th percentile, and 1-2 others who are above
the 85th percentile who can serve as language models
Targets for Shared Reading: “The Magnificient 7”
1. Put the CROWD in the CAR: Comment on what the children seem to be interested in and
wait at least 5 seconds; Ask questions using different types of questions from CROWD
and wait at least 5 seconds; Respond to what ever the child says/ does by adding more
language, modeling appropriate grammar.
2. When you ask a question, say, “I have a question,” and then ask the question.
3. Ask the children if they have any questions after sharing every 3-4 pages.
4. Relate experiences in the text to the children’s experiences.
5. Refer to letters in the children’s names when you see them on a page.
6. Point out rhyming words and alliteration (initial letters sound the same as…).
7. Teach new vocabulary by briefly defining, using synonyms, and the new word in a
sentence.
