Columbia University Presents: The Future of Democracy in the Middle East, South Asia and Africa A Workshop for NYC Teachers May 19, 2005 4PM-6PM The Institute of African Studies, the Middle East Institute and the Southern Asian Institute at Columbia University are offering an exciting curriculum development workshop on the future of democracy in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. The promise of democracy is a concern of citizens throughout the world. What factors have supported or hindered the establishment and consolidation of modern democratic government in these three important regions? What do citizens in these regions expect from modern democratic government, and what have such governments been able to achieve? What challenges does the democratic project in these regions face in the future? This workshop seeks to address some of these larger questions through specific lecture presentations by scholars with expertise in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. The workshop will include an open session for questions, comments and discussion; and provide participants with a reader that contains several key articles about the issues, as well as a list of other readings and resources that can be used for learning more about the subject. The Workshop will take place at: Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs 420 W. 118 th Street (betw.
