The Society is planning to celebrate this special anniversary in association with the 26th annual meeting. The Asian Pacific Phycological Association (APPA) is quite young; it was established in 1996 to organize international meetings on phycology in the Asian Pacific countries, under the name of The Asian Pacific Phycological Forum (APPF). The first APPF was held in Sydney, Australia in 1996, the second in Hong-Kong in 1999, and the 3rd will be held in Japan. The JSP and APPA have reached to an agreement to join these three meetings of phycology as a joint international conference - Algae2002. Algae2002 will be held in Tsukuba, Japan in July 2002. The JSP, APPF and the conference organizing committee are pleased to invite you to participate in the Algae 2002. We are hoping to have participants from many countries and enhance scientific exchange among the Asian and Pacific countries. This special opportunity would be a good starting point for constructing a network of phycological researches in Asian and Pacific countries. We are looking forward to seeing all of you in Tsukuba in July 2002. Scientific Program The conference will cover broad areas of both basic and applied phycology. The scientific program will include plenary lectures, symposia, Students Competition (oral) and poster sessions. Special lectures are also planned to review the history of the JSP activities as part of its 50th anniversary celebration. БІБЛІОГРАФІЯ / БИБЛИОГРАФИЯ / BIBLIOGRAPHY Dear colleagues, I please would call your attention to the wonderful book of JaapKaandorp and Janet Kuebler on the modelling of growth and form ofmarine sessile organisms: Jaap A. Kaandorp, Janet E. Kuebler. The Algorithmic Beauty of Seaweeds, Sponges and Corals. - Springer-verlag, Heidelberg, New York, 2001. ISBN: 3-540-67700-3. Price: EUR 58,63 (at amazone.com) This book gives a state-of-the-art overview of modeling growth and form of marine sessile organisms - such as stromatolites, algae, and metazoans including stony corals, hydrocorals, octocorals, and sponges-, using large-scale computing techniques, scientific visualization, methods for analyzing 2D and 3D forms, and particle-based modeling techniques. It originates from the workshop on Modelling Growth and Form of Marine Sessile Organisms, held at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, Santa Barbara, California, August 1999. Experts from various disciplines including developmental biology, paleontology, ecology, computer science, physics andmathematics, who have research interests in modeling the development of these organisms have been invited to contribute. The book describes all the steps required to develop and experimentally validate morphological models including collecting biological information and methods for specifying and comparing forms. Examples are given of how models are currently being applied to morphological problems in marine systems. Potential applications of growth models and morphological analyses in modern and paleo-bio-monitoring, the detection of environmental change, and the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems and aquaculture are addressed. The combination of simulation models with laboratory and field experiments provides a powerful tool to obtain insights on how the growth forms of marine organisms emerge from physical, genetic and environmental influences. Edited by Yatsuka Saijo and Hidetake Hayashi. 2001, xxiv, 427 pages, 248 figures, 4 colour plates, 65 tables, hardbound. ISBN 90-5782-092-7 $129.00 Lake Kizaki is a small lake of about 140 ha with a maximum length of 2.7 km and a maximum width of 1.2 km. In Lake Kizaki, the first sounding was carried out in 1907, but unfortunately no definite station as a base for limnological studies was established, except from 1921 to 1939, when the Fishery Experimental Station provided facilities for limnological research. This is why there are no continuous data of basic limnological interest, especially records of the flora and fauna of Lake Kizaki and the two other Nishina Lakes, Aoki and Nakatsuna, which are connected in the same water system. Although Lake Kizaki is located at the foot of the Japanese Northern Alps and the altitude of its surface is 764 m, a distinct thermal stratification with a temperature difference between layers of about 15°C forms in summer. The water temperature near the bottom is 5 to 7 °C throughout the year. Due to this thermal condition, an oxygen deficiency prevails near the lake bottom from summer to autumn until overturn. Associated with the seasonal succession of water temperature and the vertical distribution of oxic and anoxic conditions, dynamic changes in chemical conditions and related microbial activity have long been observed in this lake. Furthermore, the lake is of a convenient size for extensive studies, so that it is easy to follow changes in the lake evendaily or at one meter depth intervals. Lake Kizaki is thus an ideal field location, which explains why so many biogeochemical and microbial studies have been made on this lake. Students will learn classical and contemporary methods for the identification, classification, and phylogenetic analysis of algae; the theories underlying the methods; the application of biodiversity information in (for example) phytoplankton and benthic ecology, cellular evolution, and natural products exploration. Emphasis will be placed on the value of combined approaches, for example the characterization of populations, species and evolutionary lineages of algae with morphological and molecular data. Outstanding theoretical and practical questions will be presented and evaluated. Approximately equal emphasis will be placed on phytoplankton (diatoms, dinoflagellates, other phytoflagellates) and on seaweeds (benthic macroalgae). Field work will be extensive, as the diverse and species-rich aquatic habitats on and around San Juan Island provide ideal sites for both macroalgae and microalgae. Lecture topics will include: evolutionary survey of major groups of algae, algal survival adaptations (reproduction, life histories, functional morphology, interactions with competitors and predators), and the ecological role of algae in coastal and oceanic ecosystems. Extensive field trips and hands-on lab work will introduce participants to the techniques essential for collection, identification, and cultivation of algae from their diverse natural habitats. At the end of the course, students should be able to use several of the tools now available to identify algae and to criticallyassess their strengths and limitations as model systems of investigation. Course structure: Lectures offered Mon. through Sat., 2 lectures/day except Saturday and on days with field work. Extensive field trips to various habitats around San Juan I. (sheltered and exposed rocky intertidal, lagoons, freshwater ponds, offshore dredging and plankton tows) and 3-4 day field trip to Botany Beach Provincial Park, Vancouver I. to exposed, outercoast habitats. Extensive lab time to observe and key micro- and macroalgae. Mini-projects in lab and field designed to provide hands-onwork with algae, including techniques for identifying phytoplankton and seaweeds, isolating unialgal phytoplankton cultures, culturing macroalgae from spores, DNA extraction and amplification, algal growth experiments, field ecology observations, and others. Books for the course are: Algae by Graham & Wilcox, Keys to the Benthic Marine Algae and Seagrasses of British Columbia, Southeast Alaska, Washington and Oregon by Gabrielson et al. and Identifying Marine Phytoplankton by Tomas. Enrollment limited to 12.
