Course goals: This course is designed to help students develop their reading, writing, listening,
and speaking skills. Special attention will be given to the last two. By the end of the semester,
students optimally will have achieved speaking proficiency at the Intermediate High level on the
scale set by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages. Students will also be
given a review of selected items of French grammar.
Policy on make-ups: There will be no make-ups for exams or quizzes and assignments will not
be accepted after the deadline. Exception to this rule will be granted to students who can provide
sound documentation. Documentation (such as doctor's note or court order) must apply directly to
the student and correspond to the date of the missed assignment. The acceptance of all notes
remains entirely to the instructor's discretion.
Ethical expectations: Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses against the academic honor
code and will be punished severely. For the first offense, the student will receive a 0.0 for the
assignment in question; for a second offense, s/he will receive a 0.0 for the course. We expect
students to demonstrate a solid work ethic and to conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen,
with the UT Martin University Policies and Procedures for Student.
Disabilities: Any student eligible for and requesting academic accommodations due to a
disability is requested to provide a letter of accommodation from P.A.C.E or Student Academic
Support Center within the first two weeks of the semester.
Grading Criteria:
Exams (30%): You will take 3 exams during the semester as indicated on the lesson schedule.
Final Exam (10%): The final exam is cumulative.
Other homework (15%): Assignments either from the grammar book or the textbook.
Oral participation (10%): It is essential that you come to class each day, participate in class and
do the homework assigned. For each class, you will receive up to 10 points for participation. You
have the right to 3 unexcused absences.
Oral interview (10%): You will have one proficiency interview at the end of the semester.
Oral presentation (5%): You will do a 5 minute oral presentation in French on a topic of your
choice.
Recordings (10%): You will record yourself reading assigned passages.
Compositions (10%): You will write at least two compositions (with drafts) during the course
of the semester. All drafts compositions MUST be typed.
Grade scale:
100 - 89.6 = A / 89.5 - 79.6 = B / 79.5 - 69.6 = C / 69.5 - 59.6 = D / 59.5 - 0.0 = E
Cultural Events: The department strongly encourages those who will make use of a foreign
language in their professions to reach an acceptable level of general cultural awareness. To this
end, we have a series of cultural events that you should attend. Students qualify for extra credit by
attending approved cultural events.
Conversation hour: You must attend three of the weekly conversation hours organized by the
French faculty.
French club: All interested students are encouraged to join the CERCLE FRANCOPHONE in
order to enrich their understanding of the French language and francophone culture by
participating in its activities.
