Canadian family life and kin is very similar to family life and kin in the United States.

Today, 77 percent of Canada's population live in cities.

There are more than 20 metropolitan areas with a population of 100,000 people or more.

The invention of the canal lock, which is “an enclosed area on a canal that raises or
lowers ships from one water level to another” (Baerwald, 183-184).

“Because of increase in separation, divorce, remarriage common-law unions, and loneparent families” Canadian families have become more diverse over the past twenty years.

Most families in Canada are married families, but this has decreased from 80 perecent to
74 percent since 1986.

Married families are more commonly found in the Prairies Provinces, southern Ontario,
and Newfoundland.

Lone-parent families are more commonly found in urban communities.

Lone-parent families has increased by 33 percent between 1986 and 1996.

Lone-parents families are 22 percent of Canada's population.
