Content Knowledge able to integrate 100 question multiple choice discipline-specific assessment representing five knowledge across key areas each for 13 functional areas and business core classes with utilize leadership and three possible repetitions. team skills to accomplish Also included other SLO’s. group tasks. UNCW Strategic Goal 1 UNCW Learning Goals – foundational knowledge Implementation Required for all students registered in MGT 455 class (capstone strategy course required for all BSBA students). Administered every semester on-line. All stduetns must achieve a 60% or above to sustain their preference for preregistration sections of MGT455. Only the first assessment is used for content review. Each department reviews its set of questions relevant to its business core class for student learning improvement and makes changes to their core classes as needed. Summary of Findings Appendix A.1 Actions Taken Based on AACSB recommendation, the CSB implemented the on-line assessment for all students seeking to pre-register for MGT 455. Prior to implementation all courses reviewed content knowledge questions. Instrument was changed from 60 questions to 100 questions. The average first responses for Fall 2012 was 68.6% amd s[ring 2013 dipped to 60%. All but a few courses dropped significantly. Prior to this the trend above 60% was high and consideration to increase the mean was going to be considered. With spring 2013 showing significant drops, time must be give to determine if this was just an anomaly or a new trend that must be remedied. 1 Student Learning Outcome UNCW Strategic Goal Tools Implementation Summary of Findings Actions Taken b. Integration Method: Rubric use d in MGT 455 capstone class by faculty member to assess functional integration Every semester MGT 455 is offered including summer for all students in course. Management faculty review data for improvements. Assessment rubrics are used against comprehensive term project. Appendix A.2 In February 2012 the first CSB assessment day was conducted. Faculty working in teams used assessment data to make recommendations. Recommendations now before the curriculum committee to improve integration are 1) faculty to develop common expectations for integration. Develop website to provide the material. 2) Assess and reduce the number of overrides For pre-requisites for MGT 455. c. Team Building Method: Rubric used in MGT 455 course by students that assess each team member in their project team groups Every semester in MGT 455 class (capstone strategy course). Management faculty review data for improvements. Appendix A.3 In February 2012 the first CSB assessment day was conducted. Faculty working in teams used assessment data to make recommendations. As a result additional teamwork training was added to the new BUS205 and BUS305 (see Appendix XX)course to improve SLO. 2 Student Learning Outcome UNCW Strategic Goal SLO2: Our students will demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills through problem identification, analysis and synthesis of data, evaluation of alternatives, and defense of a solution. UNCW Goal 1 Tools Implementation Summary of Findings Actions Taken d. Leadership Method: Rubric used in MGT 455 by all students to assess the leadership skills of their team leaders in their project teams. Every semester in MGT 455 class (capstone strategy course). Management faculty review data for improvements. Appendix A.4 In February 2012 the first CSB assessment day was conducted. Faculty working in teams used assessment data to make recommendations. As a result additional leadership training was added to the new BUS205 and BUS405 course to improve SLO. Activities in BUS305 can now lead to a leadership certificate earned from Student Affairs. a. Problem Solving Method: At the end of the semester in the Production Management course (POM 370), a non-graded problem is added to assess problem solving. Using a problem solving rubric, a faculty member who does not teach the course, assesses the ability to problem solve for each student. Assessment is conducted every semester POM 370 is taught from a sample of student work. The AOL committee reviews the work and passes it to the curriculum committee as needed. Appendix B.1 All problem solving factors are scoring on an average of 86% except using of information. With the new University Studies requirement for the use of information literacy, this course should be added to both University Stdueis and improved on this factor within the course. The AOL committee will address this in spring 2013. b. Critical Thinking Method: At the end of the semester in the Production Management course (POM 370), a non-graded problem is added to assess problem solving. Using a critical Assessment is conducted every semester POM 370 is taught from a sample of student work. The AOL committee reviews the work and passes it to the curriculum committee as Appendix B.2 Low scores continue in “evaluating evidence” (around 58% range). Improvement through case training in BUS305 will be considered and provided again in MGT455. This will be discussed at the AOL meetings in spring 2013. 3 Student Learning Outcome UNCW Strategic Goal SLO3: Our students will be able to conceptualize a complex issue into a coherent written statement and oral presentation, demonstrated with the effective use of technology. UNCW Goal 1 Tools Implementation thinking rubric, a faculty member who does not teach the course, assesses the ability to problem solve for each student. needed. a. Written Communication Method: Due to an internal analysis the CSB dropped the use of EBI’s writing assessment and inbedded rubrics in the BUS205 and BUS305 classes. Identified writing activities were inbedded into the BUS205 and BUS305 courses with associated rubrics. In addition the only required text for these two course is the “business Writer’s Handbook”. Summary of Findings Appendix C.1 Appendix C.2 Appendix C.3 Early data suggests that there is a large gap in student ability to write. Actions Taken Although early, a proposal is being considered byt the curriculum committee to require those stduents earning consistent scores of 2 or less be required to take an additional course in Business Writing trhough the UNCW English Departmetn. This discussion and faculty input will occur in spring 2013. Must add Jack’s data here) b. Oral Communication/ Technology Use Method: All faculty in the MGT 455 CSB capstone course (strategy course) use a rubric (encompassing components of oral communication and the use of technology) to assess individuals as they present in This assessment is conducted every semester in MGT 455 by all faculty teaching the class. The management faculty review the data for recommended actions. Based on the data and the assessment day recommendations it is recommended a minimum of one presentation for each concentration in a 300 level course and one presentation in BUS205 be conducted. However after review the shear numbers in the BUS205 prohibits it in this class. 4 Student Learning Outcome UNCW Strategic Goal Tools Implementation Summary of Findings Actions Taken their project teams for the semester. SLO4: Our students will understand the importance of social responsibility, diversity, ethics and legal issues. UNCW Goal 3 a. Ethics, Social Responsibility, and Diversity Method: This assessment is conducted by utilizing questions directly related to these three areas from the content knowledge assessment conducted for students pre- registering in MGT 455. The assessment instrument is required for all students and is online. This assessment is conducted every semester and is evaluated by the curriculum committee. a. Legal Issues Method: This assessment is conducted by utilizing questions directly related to the legal environment (BLA 361) from the content knowledge assessment conducted for students preregistering in MGT 455. The assessment instrument is This assessment is part of the content knowledge assessment and is conducted every semester and is evaluated by the BLA faculty Appendix D.1 Appendix D.2 Appendix D.3 Appendix D.4 Insufficient data was being gathered on the dimensions of ethics, social responsibility, and diversity. This assessment is now included in the content knowledge of SLO1. The assessment instrument was changed to include more extensive assessment of these qualities and is being included in the 60% requirement for pre-registration in MGT 455. Ten hours of volunteer work have been added to the BUS305 course for social responsibility focused on diverse populations. A peer reflection paper is required for these activities. This is the first semester the course is bing offered so no information has beed gained as yet. There is a great deal of fluctuation in the BLA361 content questions. Faculty teaching in this area are reviewing the data for course changes or question continuity. This can be accomplished now that three sets of data are complete. 5 Student Learning Outcome UNCW Strategic Goal Tools Implementation Summary of Findings Actions Taken required for all students and is online. SLO5: Our students will demonstrate an understanding of global business practices that embraces the opportunities of multicultural, diverse environments, as they relate to local, national and global operations. UNCW Goal 4 Method: This assessment is conducted by utilizing questions directly related to international business (INB 300 course) from the content knowledge assessment conducted for students preregistering in MGT 455. This assessment is now imbedded in the online requirement for all students wishing to preregister for MGT 455 every semester and is evaluated by the international business committee Appendix E.l INB300 is being taught by both fulltime and partime faculty. The average score on the assessment content questions has remained around 62%, however one question averages 3%. Upon review of these questions there is most likely an incorrect answer inbedded in the assessment which will need to be changed. The IB committee will review the data this spring as a part of the required concentrationreview that is to be completed this year. 6 Appendix A: BSBA SLO1 Findings A.1 Content-Knowledge Assessment Results as of Spring 2013 100% Content Knowledge Course Averages 90% 80% 70% 60% Spring 2010 50% Fall 2010 40% Fall 2011 30% Spring 12 20% Fall 12 10% Spring 13 0% ACG 201 ACG 203 BLA 361 ECN 221 ECN 222 Subject FIN 335 INB 300 MGT 350 MIS 213 MKT 340 OPS 370 QMM 280 Diversity Spring 2010 Fall 2010 Fall 2011 Spring 12 ACG 201 65.60% 67.11% 66.61% 72.02% 69.34% 61.66% ACG 203 BLA 361 88.80% 70.40% 84.44% 59.11% 81.58% 68.03% 82.48% 69.77% 81.35% 68.49% 72.08% 60.59% ECN 221 ECN 222 67.20% 48.80% 61.78% 50.67% 51.34% 66.56% 60.41% 71.75% 57.15% 64.52% 50.12% 59.11% FIN 335 73.60% 64.89% 60.57% 62.38% 62.55% 54.47% INB 300 MGT 350 72.00% 74.40% 75.11% 62.22% 72.10% 74.37% 74.08% 77.99% 72.34% 77.53% 63.63% 67.19% MIS 213 MKT 340 56.80% 80.00% 52.00% 70.67% 59.30% 66.65% 61.73% 68.53% 63.30% 71.05% 53.91% 59.11% OPS 370 QMM 280 56.80% 71.20% 49.33% 64.00% 51.45% 67.14% 57.75% 65.68% 56.78% 65.51% 46.92% 56.81% Diversity 70.31% 74.38% 72.54% 64.79% Ethics Social Resp. 78.36% 68.14% 79.43% 68.78% 76.89% 70.32% 67.26% 63.08% 66.83% 69.81% 68.64% 60.05% Avg. After the introductory session, students are expected to make an appointment (not during this class or any other class) to begin this process. If you do not complete a resume during this course, your final grade will be an “Incomplete”. This is mandatory and each student is expected to attend, attendance will be taken. See attached memo from Dean Clark. And If I Ignore All This…? 2 Percent (%) Reduction in Final Class Grade if: Unprepared for RAP appointment Students fails to keep scheduled RAP Appointment with Consultant (No-Show) Resume appointment is kept but follow-up is not within the designed timeframe, however the resume is eventually completed Student fails to make an appointment within the assigned window of time for the particular section of BUS 305 Incomplete for BUS 305 if: Failure to meet AND finalize an approved resume with consultant will result in an “Incomplete” for the student for BUS 305 Unless RAP is completed, the “Incomplete” will automatically convert to an “F” on the last class day of the next full (nonsummer) semester. You cannot graduate with an “Incomplete” on your record”.
