Downside of Economic Globalization
• Trade rules clashing with environmental
standards
• Trade and investment rules undermining
national environmental protection
programs
• Income disparity continuous to grow
• Forests, marine resources and other
world natural treasures are overexploited

Sustainable Economic System
• To reform the global framework of economic
policies and institutions in order to create a
more balanced global economy that is
environmentally sustainable and beneficial to
all people in a more equitable way

Sustainable Economic System
• To develop trade rules and institutions that
take into account their environmental
impacts without intruding on regulatory
areas that are properly the subject of
environmental institutions

Problem of Sustainability
• There are many countries that tend to disentangle
trade from environmental regulations, fearing that
environmental prerequisites for trade would
render these countries economically
disadvantaged

The Case of Thailand
• Trade strategies and policies relating to trade
liberalization helped the country to diversify and
boost its exports.
• On the other hand, the situation has not been
favorable to the environment. There is weakness
of, and noncompliance with environmental
regulations.

ecological consequences
Background
Thale Noi has been constantly degraded in habitat and declined
in biodiversity. Furthermore, eutrophication which frequently
occurs poses a serious problem of this ecosystem.
-High biodiversity
-Socio-economic values
-Thailand’s first Ramsar site
Goal:
to understand biogeochemical dynamics of eutrophication process
and its ecological consequences. This knowledge is crucial for
conserving and bringing sustainable development to the ecosystem
of Thale Noi.

Conclusion
• Thailand economy has to strengthen its
policies toward “greener” trade.
• This could be done by way of adopting
trade-restricting measures for pollutionintensive export goods.
Environmental Cooperation and Capacity Building

Conclusion
• Increase R&D for producing green
products an adopting proactive stance
concerning foreign environmental
regulations affecting Thai producers.
