BSAD 3750: Chinese Business Practices and Cultures March 7-22, 2014 (Spring Break) Pre-orientation Prior to departing for China, participants will attend a mandatory orientation session on China. The orientation sessions include, but are not limited to: the Chinese economy and business environment; business, family, and social protocol; dress; host families; food and entertainment; instruction on using public transportation; importance of business dress, appointment keeping, and promptness; and other topics as deemed necessary for a successful international experience. In China and Hong Kong Participants will visit businesses and cultural sites in China, beginning their journey in Beijing, then traveling to Shanghai, Xian, Guangzhou, and concluding in Hong Kong. Presentations will be provided by local businesses, government officers, University Professors and will include topics such as organization, products, human resources, education, training, compensation, market strategy, international marketing and other relevant topics. A question and answer session for the participants will follow company presentations. University of International Business and Economics in Shanghai will serve as a host university for participants while in Shanghai. The visit to the university will include a tour of the facilities and visits to classes. Basic Chinese language training will be a part of participants’ daily activities. Participants will visit the American Embassy in Beijing for a presentation by U.S. State Department officials on the Chinese economy. The presentation will include explanations on functions of the American Embassy in China. Participants will also visit the Wisconsin Office in Shanghai, featuring a presentation given by the trade office director. This presentation will include information on how Chinese economy and commerce relates directly with doing business in Wisconsin. Post-orientation Upon return from China, participants will attend a postorientation to discuss experiences and outcomes of the trip. Credits and Evaluation BSAD 3750 is a 3 credit hour course. Students who participate in the China Short Study Course Tour will be evaluated on the basis of attendance at the orientation sessions, lecture presentations, and participation in group discussions. In addition, students will be required to write a research paper (about 10 pages) on a selected topic of interest. Students will also be expected to participate in all the organized site tours. A letter grade of A, B, C, D, or F will be assigned upon completion of the research report. Eligibility The China International Short Study Tour is open to all full-time UW-P students in good standing. There is no prerequisite for BSAD 3750. This course satisfies the International Education requirement. Tuition differentials for non-resident and TSI students apply.
