Charging students to attend football games
The budget cuts affecting students is unfair, but extracurricular activities and sports are a little more
understandable. Making cuts in students classes shouldn't be an option.
I think a lot of wasteful staffing could be cut. The student center help desk does not need to be open as
early or late as it is. There are too many university employees who do not seem to even enjoy their job
and doesn't seem needed.
[O]ne possible way to raise a bit of money could be to charge for a discounted membership to the pac
rather than have it be free
Get rid of the Shuttle Bus or limit the routes/how long they run for. I have been here for almost a semester
and a half and I have only seen about 5 people on it … after classes are done. There is no point to run
the shuttles if no one hardly ever goes on it. It would save money.
Budget Cuts are needed. The school needs to look at the things that are not necessary to have a
progressive school. I completely agree with the idea of cutting funding to sports, we are a D3 school not
D1. If people want to do intramurals they can pay to join the team. Intramurals are not necessary for
someone to get a degree. More than 90% of students have a personal computer and computers on
campus are handy but not necessary. They are a waste of energy and cause the campus to be less
sustainable anyway. Remedial education is also not necessary. If you need remedial classes there is a
technical college in town that the university can team up with so that students can get their remedial
credits out of the way. Is that not the point of going to college? To get a degree? I get what the
government is doing from a business point of view and yes we may have some things cut but it is a
necessary evil. Everything that is proposed to be eliminated are things that are not necessary for the
academic excellence of a university.
Reduce printing on campus
I believe we should start using more efficient light bulbs.
I think if you cut down or start charging for things that people do for fun around campus, people are going
to stop going out and meeting people, and may be inclined to choose another university
Cut the full time social media director and roll that job into another or give it to students.
I am very concerned as to what these cuts mean to the quality of education I am receiving. I would prefer
nothing be cut, but that clearly isn't an option. Some ideas regarding the budget cuts would be to have the
hall lights on less in the ResHalls, such as only every other light (if possible) being on after a certain time,
such as 11pm and turn back on at 5am, causing 6 less hours of power used per ResHall. While this isn't a
big change, it's something.
What about a small monthly membership fee (2-5 dollars a month per student) for the PAC. It's an
incredibly nice facility and that's still cheaper than any other rate that you'd find at an actual gym or rec.
center
We need to make cuts. We spend too much. I think it's a load of hog wash that there is nothing in here
about reducing full time campus staff and moving to more part time help, LTE's and student workers.
There are plenty of students who could fill plenty of jobs on campus.
When it comes to saving campus money, I believe a big step the university can take is actively reducing
energy consumption. I see a lot of unnecessary lights in use in broad daylight. For example: the lobby,
hallways, and the stairwells in bridgeway -where a lot of glass windows are in place for natural light- have
the lights on all day long. Switch to LED lights, turn off lights during the day, and use automatic light
systems in classrooms and labs where that aren't necessarily used for long periods of time. Invest in
simple reduction programs that raise awareness about personal energy usage instead of cutting budgets
to important academic and athletic programs.
Cuts are necessary on the UWP campus but it must be done on a very optimal way such as mergers
between different programs. As well as taking into consideration of unused resources such as computer
labs that simply aren't used and wasted energy on campus when no school sessions are taking place.
Also sports is an area that has to be looked at not only in our division 3 but also division 1 schools.
Another consideration must be length of classes in weeks to reduce the amount of energy is consumed
by the student population. (for exmaple UW-Oshkosh has less weeks per semester) Also self sufficient
methods should be invested in sooner rather than later such as solar power and more wind power
generators on campus to reduce cost in the future.
I feel student employment could be more efficient. I see a lot of students standing around, especc
I think the new position created for the Chancellor's new assistant is excessive, especially with her
approximately $120,000 salary.
Have professors teach more than 2 classes in the School of Ag to allow for more students to graduate in
4 years to limit the amount of financial aid, grants, and scholarships being awarded to those who could
have been out in 4 years but could not fit one class into the only semester it was offered due to general
educations or other class conflicts
Offer all classes both semesters so that, again, students can graduate in 4 years rather than having to
stay an extra semester or full year because they could not get into a class that is only offer during specific
semesters.
Cut areas that do not directly affect the scholarly areas. That is why we are going to school in the first
place. Remove teachers that only teach one subject.
Universities follow a business model. This means that the top administrators get paid quite a bit. I would
like to see our University take the lead and reduce the pay of top administrators. I know quite a few of
them and know that they are very good people. This is why I believe they will be willing to give my
proposal consideration and - if my faith is well-placed - even follow it.
Cut the stipend growth of returning Resident Assistants of $100 every year.
I think other things like cutting the salaries for people who are higher up, as well as taking money out for
office parties and travel for people who are higher up should be cut out instead. This budget cut should
not involve anyone's job position. Job positions should not be eliminated.
Keep temperatures inside buildings at normal room temperature all year. Some rooms are extremely hot
and some are extremely cold which doesn't make sense. Why not maintain the temperature and keep it
constant?
Reduce the number of general education classes and make more of them count for two things, like
gender studies and historical perspective. You don't need to offer 10 classes for one topic and only get 6
or 7 students in a few of them.
There is some old equipment that we don't need in the engineering hall. suggest you sell it to raise money
for newer, better pieces of equipment we can actually use in our courses.
I also suggest cutting ge1000 and making it an optional seminar (if that)
what was taught in one semester was so filled with fluff it could be completed in two weeks with one hour
every mon, tues, friday.
Consolidate gen eds and create more multiple counting gen eds. Cut overhead positions that aren't
directly talked to the university's mission to teach students.
-Slight increase in parking fees (but not drastic)
-Boost recycling initiatives to cut down on trash volume (which could ave been recycled). This can be
done by using even more recycling bins around campus.
-Initiatives to go green in the classroom with less handouts/ necessary printing etc to reduce paper costs
OR perhaps increase students printing budgets and any non necessary printing (like quizzes, exams etc)
can be done by the student at their discretion.
-Maybe in the next several years set a cap on the cost of any individual speaker, musician etc (if this
would save a significant amount of money)
-Constantly improve heating and cooling systems to allow for greatest cost savings (be it entire systems,
improving insulation of ducts, insulation of walls, replacing drafty windows.
-a subpoint: Perhaps an initiative on campus to not use the handicap doors unless needed because they
allow so much heat out, especially on these extremely cold days.
-another subpoint: is there some kind of way to recycle hot/ cool air back into a building? I think I heard
about that from a company called Greenheck in Schofield, WI. This could be a huge energy cost saving in
the long term.
-Another energy point: perhaps in the near future invest in vertical wind turbines. They do not need much
space and depending on location and material could possibly present a huge cost saving in the long-term.
We should have a bake sale to make money.
Athletics/fitness facilities could be used for a small fee. Charge a small about for entrance to sporting
events ($1 or $2). Don't cut any success programs.
Cut administration before professors.
I feel the University budget is an important issue, but cutting isn't the answer to everything. Look at
businesses that are thriving. During the recession they cut back on things that were being wasted, but
they knew that eliminating produce lines would limit their net income.
University of WIsconsin - Platteville is similar, you want students to come to UWP, so don't cut everything
that makes UWP special.
Have people pay to use the gym, Make Uwp studys a 3 credit class to get students out faster, Raise class
credits in General
-Eliminate unnecessary general credit requirements for EMS majors in art, music, theater, women's
studies, ethnicity, etc. Less students would be taking those classes so you could cut positions in said
departments. EMS majors have no use for those classes and should not be forced to take them.
-Extend class hours so there is less school days. This is what UW-Oshkosh does. No school days means
less energy spent.
-Get bids for snow removal and lawn care to see if someone else can do it cheaper than ourselves.
-Eliminate unnecessary athletic coaching positions
-Make the chancellor write his own speeches
-Eliminate campus read
-Cut down on guest speakers
-Reduce awards ceremonies and dinners
-Replace certain full time staff with part time student help
-Figure out how to better regulate temperatures in buildings on campus. Lower temperatures in academic
buildings on weekends.
-Promote energy saving techniques in dorm facilities.
-Freeze administrator salaries
-eliminate campus shuttle
-cut hours at the university book store
It's pointless to eliminate a car fleet that already exists.
The EMS computer labs are always full. If they are to be eliminated or reduced in size, then the
computers should be updated a lot more than they are.
Speakers an performers brought to campus by CPR and ResLife could be less frequent to save money.
