FIRST AID FOR RECREATIONAL INJURIES FIRST AID FOR RECREATIONAL INJURIES Target: I will be able to describe procedures for emergency care and life saving There are 206 bones in the body and more than 600 muscles. • Joint: The point where two bones meet • Ligaments: Fibers that connect bones together • Tendons: Tough tissue fibers that connect muscles to bone Pg. 39 Splint: Material or device that protects and immobilizes a body part • To splint an injured bone: Include the joints above and below the injured bone • To splint an injured joint: Include the bones above and below the injured joint Fracture: A break or crack in the bone • If the break goes through the skin it is an open fracture; if not does not it is a closed fracture 1.Call 911 if serious; get prompt medical help 2.Follow universal precautions and treat any bleeding 3.Keep the injured part from moving; use a splint if necessary • If the victim has a head injury keep them entirely immobile 4.Apply ice to the injured area to prevent swelling Dislocation: The movement of a bone away from its joint 1. Obtain medical care immediately 2. Do not try to put the bone back into place yourself 3. Splint above and below the dislocation 4. Apply ice Sprain: An injury to ligaments, tendons, and soft tissues around a joint 1. Follow the RICE treatment • Rest the injury for at least 24-72 hours • Ice the injury 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off • Compression- Wrap the injury with a bandage to limit swelling • Elevation- Raise the injury above heart level to reduce swelling and drain blood/fluid from the area Strain: An overstretched muscle/tendon- aka a pulled muscle 1.
