What is a CV? A Curriculum Vitae (CV or vita) is an extended biographical summary of education, employment and experience, typically used by those seeking post-graduate study or positions in higher education. CV vs. Resume? A CV, as opposed to a resume, focuses on academic accomplishments, such as research experience, publications, presentations, and committee participation. A CV is much longer and more detailed than a resume. When Should I Use a CV? When applying to graduate or doctoral programs, a CV is increasingly accepted instead of a resume. When searching for a career, collegiate teaching positions and all that entails (publishing, tenure review, speaking, grant applications, fellowships, etc.) will require a CV. Also, most international job applications will ask for a CV. What Should I Include in my CV? Personal Info – name, address, phone number, email Education – all degrees earned or currently in progress, starting with the most recent Professional experience – all current and past work, including graduate/teaching assistantships, as well as specific skills, publications, presentations, awards, honors, spoken languages, etc. See next page for more detailed categories. Helpful Hints - - Content: Information should be concise and relevant to your field. There is no need to include personal information (such as age, race, sex, religion, marital status, etc.). All information should be current and up-to-date. Layout: Make sure the format is clean and easy to read. High-quality, basic (typical size and color) paper should be used. Only print on one side of each page. Do not use fancy fonts, colors or graphics – be consistent with one font style. Be sure that your name is on every page of the vita.
