FREDERIC E. LEE Frederic Edward Lee came to the University of Illinois in 1929, joining the faculty of the Department of Economics as Associate Professor. He completed his Ph.d. at Yale University in 1916. Widely experienced in the fields of economics, sociology and anthropology, Professor Lee came to Illinois having served as Professor of Economics and Sociology at Sei Gakuin College in Tokyo, Japan, and as Dean and Head of Economics and Sociology at the University of Maryland. His work as economist under the departments of state and commerce took him to many eastern and european countries, giving him firsthand knowledge of a vast cross-section of cultures. While at Illinois, Professor Lee would achieve prominence for his scholarly researches and writings in Banking and International Finance. He would publish many books and monographs, including the well known “History of Money and Banking Institutions,” and “International Finance.” In 1937, he was named Director of Research for the Illinois Bankers Association. After an 18-year tenure, Dr. Lee would take disability leave in 1947. He would be commemorated for his many years of distinguished service to his department, university, state, and country at his passing in 1952.
