Students will be introduced to basic principles and movement techniques of leading styles
of jazz dance. They will study a historical lineage of jazz dance choreographers from
past to present and how their contributions influence dance today . An Introduction of
basic jazz dance movement vocabulary such as jazz walks , jazz square, pas de bourre ,
chaine turns , ball change moves and a variety of leaps and jumps. There will be
readings, writing assigments ,video viewing and analysis ,and live performance
attendance requirements throughout the semester. This is a movement class so students
are required to come prepared to move each class.
(Readings and attendance at dance performances or films will be required).
A.
Content and Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students will be introduced to basic jazz dance moves and styles .
Each class will include a warm up containing body isolations and basic dance positions, followed
by center stretching and strength work ( sometimes performed on the floor) , across the floor jazz
locomotor movements such as kicks, leaps, and turns. Finally, a jazz combination that will be
practiced and performed in groups for the rest of the class. Students will also have the
opportunity to create their own movement combinations during class time.
1. Students will demonstrate a knowledge of basic level 1 jazz dance technique and a
basic understanding of the evolution of jazz dance throughout the decades via , readings and
video viewing.
2. Students will gain a basic jazz dance movement vocabulary;
3. Students will work to achieve proper body alignment , placement, and awareness,
muscle strength, joint flexibility, coordination, balance, self-confidence, and performance quality;
4. Students will demonstrate knowledge of rhythm, timing, and phrasing;
5. Students will develop an understanding of studio space, stage space and elements of
space such as direction, shape, line, and level;
6. Students will successfully create a short jazz dance combination emphasizing jazz
dance vocabulary for their final prioject.
Required Dress for Class:
Ladies: Jazz pants , yoga pants, or dance tights and either a leotard or workout shirt . We
will be dancing barefoot.
Gentlemen: T-shirt, sweat pants or work out pants. We will be dancing barefoot.
Long hair should be tied back for all. It is too hot and distracting if left loose.
No jewelry
No gum
No Street Clothes
Dance Studies Program Participation Policy for Dance Technique Classes:
There are NO unexcused absences. Classes may be missed because of illness, which must be
verified by the health center or a doctor; official college trips off campus, which must be verified
in a letter; job interviews; graduate interviews; or a family emergency. These absences must be
made up within two weeks following the absence in another technique class. Please fill out a
make-up form; the professor signs your form after you complete the make-up class.
NOTE: Please inform me of physical problems or previous injuries that may need special
considerations.
Requirements:
A.
Participation in all classes. Absences and coming to class late will affect your grade.
1.
Observing class is recommended, if you are unable to participate in a class for
reasons of illness or injury. You are expected to write your observation comments in your journal
during the class.
2.
A class may be made up providing it is within two weeks of the absence and the
student has a written verification (College Administration or College Health Center) of the
illness, injury or other emergency circumstance. A class may be made up in another appropriate
class. Have a make up form signed by the Professor and submit to Professor Lancos.
3.
In cases of prolonged absence (beyond 2 weeks) the student should make an
appointment with the Deborah Scodese French to discuss the best course of action.
4.
Incompletes are given only in verified medical or personal emergencies.
5.
If you have had, or now have, a physical problem that could affect your
performance in this class, please discuss it with me in my office hours.
6.
Additional laboratory practice sessions will be assigned on a regular schedule.
B.
Completion of all assigned work: assessment portfolio, quizzes/tests, readings, and
attendance at performances.
C.
Keeping a notebook/journal of terms, assignments, personal corrections, short/long term
goals and observations is beneficial and suggested. This notebook/journal will be a key part of
your self- assessment portfolio.
D.
Required attendance at campus performances, lectures, demonstrations, master classes.
Evaluation Procedures
Improvement in your technical ability develops through your discipline and
dedication by participating in each class.Your participation grade includes these important
aspects:
Active enthusiastic participation, punctuality ,a positive attitude, motivation, and a strong
consistent work ethic. Your improvement depends upon your application of corrections,
asking questions, being observant and correct practice.

Suggested aesthetic discernment and extra credit campus and off-campus performances will
be announced during the semester. Read the Brodie Hall Dance Board for more details.
Assessment Procedure Using the Portfolio Process
Bring your camera/ phone. Your class work can be digitally taped during the semester
for self, peer, and professor evaluation. Bringing your camera/ phone for this taping is your
responsibility. It is your record of growth during a given semester and may be used from one
semester to the next, and one year to the next--an on-going portfolio of your work in Dance.

If you are absent or injured on a Portfolio Video Day it is your responsibility to arrange for
a camera and music to complete your Portfolio within 2 classes of the missed Portfolio.
