Update on Qualifying, MSW and PhD applications, 2013-14
Graduate applicants applying this year were the first to test the University’s new online
electronic application system (commonly referred to as GAP). As with all new systems, there
were problems with several aspects of the process. In particular, email requests not received
by referees and referees not being able to upload their letters electronically. The GAP
programmers have received feedback from all departments, and next year’s admission process
should go smoothly. Although the deadline to apply was January 15, the School of Social Work
is maintaining all admission files open for at least an additional 2 weeks to receive any
outstanding letters of reference. This extension will in no way adversely affect any applicant.
Good luck to everyone who applied!

Montreal Theatre
A play about Stephen Truscott playing at the Centaur Theatre from Jan 29th - Feb 24th, 2013
provides a dramatic portrayal of the murder of schoolgirl Lynne Harper in 1959 and the
conviction of 14 year old Stephen Truscott. This case fundamentally changed Canadian
7
opinion about criminal justice and forever changed the landscape of the close-knit Ontario
community where the murder and conviction took place. Then-prime minister John
Diefenbaker admitted to "shock" when he heard Truscott's sentence and realized it damaged
the reputation of Canada’s system of justice internationally. Two years later his government
introduced legislation prohibiting the execution of juveniles.
Waiting for the Barbarians is an adaptation of JM Coetzee’s iconic novel, playing at the Segal
Centre from Jan 27th - Feb 17th, 2013. It tackles the complex dialectics between the oppressed
and the oppressor under a totalitarian regime. When faced with the acts of brutality committed
by the power structures he unwillingly serves, the Magistrate has to make the decisions of all
those who live in conscious complicity with totalitarian regimes. He engages in introspection
that takes the form of a rhythmic stream of consciousness, delving into complex philosophical
and moral issues to create a critical analysis of the dynamics of political oppression.
