BSW General Assembly
On Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013 at 2:30 pm in Wendy Patrick room, there will be a BSW
General Assembly. On the agenda is to approve the SWSA constitution. If you wish to add an
item to the agenda, please email communication.swsa@gmail.com. Otherwise, it is very
important to have student presence as decisions cannot be made without quorum being met.

Series #5: April 15th, 2013 – Dr. Novotná
In her talk entitled The Role of Lived Experience of Addiction and/or Recovery of
Professionals Working in their Practice-related Decision Making, Dr. Gabriela Novotná
will present the findings of her research on how the role of personal lived experience of
addiction and recovery affects the decision making of administrators working in
addiction agencies that serve women in Canada. Dr. Novotná received her PhD in Social
Work at the Wilfrid Laurier University in 2010 and is currently an Assistant Professor of
Addiction Counselling (non-tenure-stream) at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the
University of Lethbridge. Dr. Novotná’s research interests converge at the intersection of
practice in the field of addictions, translation of knowledge for evidence-informed

Series #6: April 17th, 2013 – Dr. Kahn
In her talk entitled “Not this, not that”: The Experience of Muslims Seeking Asylum in
the United States on the Basis of Sexual Orientation and Gender, Dr. Sarilee Kahn will
present results of a qualitative study focusing on the experience of 14 persons from
Islamic societies in Africa and the Middle East who gained asylum in the U.S. on the
basis of sexual orientation or gender. Dr. Kahn completed her PhD in 2012 at New York
University, following many years in clinical practice working with refugees and asylum
seekers. Dr. Kahn’s research interests cover such areas as refugees and asylees, crosscultural trauma and recovery, secondary trauma in humanitarian aid workers, and
international social work practice and program development, etc. For more information,

Message from Dean Manfredi: People, Processes, & Partnerships

Mar. 27, 2013 regarding the Project entitled People, Processes, and Partnerships, which enables
us to rethink both the organization and process of delivering administrative support services in
the Faculty of Arts since the potential Leacock space scenarios were posted for public reaction
in late February. A new series of FAQs, in response to the issues and concerns raised at the
Town Hall and via the web form, have been posted on the People, Processes, and Partnerships

Interview with Katie Larson: SSMU President Elect
Katie Larson was the big winner of the recent Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU)
elections, prevailing over Chris Bangs in the race for SSMU President. In all, voters selected six
new members of the SSMU executive for 2013-14. For more on the election results, read the

Getting Students’ Voices Heard in the Hiring Process
The Academic/Student Affairs Committee of SWAGS is continuing its participation in the Staff
Selection Promotion Tenure Committee (SSPTC) in search of candidates for full-time tenuretrack teaching positions at the School of Social Work. In order to ensure that students’ voices
are considered in the hiring process, BSW, MSW, Q-Year, PhD, and Postdoctoral students are
invited to:
o
Attend scheduled job-talks (please refer to the News from the School section
above), and complete a feedback form (to be distributed at the job-talk);
o

Meet and greet with potential candidates following the job-talk and interview.
Petition to Aid NDG Food Depot's Search
The NDG Food Depot (NDG FD) was recently notified from the building owner that their lease
would no longer be renewed. With less than a few months remaining to find another location,
the NDG FD is asking the NDG counsellors and the mayor of Montreal to help out this important
service to the community. This could include providing them with a municipal building, helping
them secure a permanent building, or simply further aiding them in the process of finding a

Reminder: Call for Applications - Wolfe Graduate Fellowships
The Wolfe Chair in Scientific and Technological Literacy is pleased to announce a competition
for a limited number of Wolfe Graduate Fellowships (valued at 8,000 dollars) for McGill graduate
students in the Faculty of Arts whose thesis work reflects the themes of the chair. The Wolfe
Chair is seeking outstanding graduate students who will be writing their thesis or dissertation
during the 2013-2014 academic year (preference will be given to PhD students during their final

Reminder: Arts Graduate Student Travel Award Information Session
The Arts Graduate Student Travel Awards (Arts GST) are competitive awards designed to support
M.A. and PhD student travel to conduct research (archival research or field work) and to
disseminate research (conferences and talks). You can learn how to get travel funding at the Arts
GST Information Session on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 11:30am in ARTS 160. It is open to
all Arts graduate students. The next application deadline for the Arts GST is May 15, 2013. For
