GUIDELINES FOR CONSTRUCTIVE DIALOGUE

 Show respect: Listen carefully, pay attention,
don’t interrupt
 Raise hands when you want to make a comment
 Be considerate of other people’s feelings: Avoid
“judging” opinions, avoid put-downs but feel free
to respectfully challenge others
 Choose “better” words: less strong/emphatic,
choose words that encourage others
 Be honest (vs. falsifying information/falsifying
one’s level of information)
 Maintain confidentiality: No talking about each
other outside of group/class
 Develop proper setting for discussion
 Think before you talk so you stick to topic/speak
carefully, get to the point
 Don’t assume you know what the other person will
say
