LP 6 - Critical Thinking Skills Assessment
Target Competencies
Tolerate diverse points of views.
Analyze personal prejudice.
Apply ethical decision-making processes.
Support one's own ethical stance.
Directions
We now begin the preliminary research for your case study. You will do this research by yourself,
with a partner, or in triads (no more than three/group). Choose wisely! You must live with the
decision to trust those you agree to work with: How likely are they to do their fair share? How
likely are they to do quality work? How readily will they accept criticism/ feedback? How likely are
they to provide needed criticism/feedback? How self-motivated have they been?
Workings alone or with your partners, select an ethical dilemma to research. (Note: By doing this
preliminary research, you may change your minds about your topic, and that's okay!)
Besides a written report, you will prepare a visual presentation ("model," Power Point, collage,
drama, etc.) to be presented in ten minutes or less the last class meeting of the semester.
Ready? Complete the following steps:
1. Describe and define your ethical dilemma in neutral, descriptive language. That is, avoid
"loaded language".
2. Define at least two terms that may be unclear or contested.
3. Describe personal biases as you begin your research. That is, do you already "take sides"? If
so, why/how?
4. Identify at least five critical thinking questions that could guide your research (review the
hand-out "Questioning Skills").
5. Identify at least five sources of facts for your research that are valid, reliable, and objective.
(Note: You needn't actually do the research, but do identify appropriate resources.) Reminder: On
the whole, these should not be .com resources! Use the MPTC database. Develop five facts /
pieces of evidence relevant to the ethical issue from five different sources. Cite your sources
using APA.
6. You make generalizations that are specific, clear, and representative of the dilemma. Provide
three generalizations about the ethical dilemmas.
7. You make comparisons to the case study that is relevant and true to the dilemma. Your team
cites two comparisons using the two rules for good comparisons.
8. You infer cause from correlation that is accurate and supported by evidence. Use one to two
good arguments from correlation to cause.
41
9. Having completed the research, explain the course of moral action or conclusion to take in
light of your team values
10. Your team develops a 10-minute visual presentation for the class that covers
a) Define the ethical dilemma
b) Five critical thinking questions
c) Five facts relevant to the case study
d) Best action or conclusion to ethical dilemma
e) How your thinking has changed as a result of the research.
11. You meet deadlines. You apply standard rules of language structure including grammar,
spelling, and punctuation.
12. You document sources of information using APA citation style. You accurately cite each of the
five facts using APA in-text citations. You format a Reference Page for five valid, reliable, and
objective sources on your topic.
Use the sample paper format to complete the written report and complete a visual
presentation.
