Evaluation written by Allen J. Mauney, Instructor
Course description
This is an integrated college algebra – trigonometry class. Topics were covered
primarily to support learning calculus, but the class can also be viewed as an introduction to
mathematical modeling.. Students were expected to recognize, graph, calculate with, and solve
problems with polynomial, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.
Throughout the class, functions were presented graphically, symbolically, and numerically.
Students were expected to evaluate, compose, combine, and interpret functions in each of the
formats. Right triangle and unit circle trigonometry were thoroughly introduced. Identities and
solving triangles were also covered. Throughout students were introduced to advanced
examples of mathematical reasoning and were expected to construct sound mathematical
arguments at an appropriate level. Activities in class included group and individual assignments,
labs, and discussions. Additionally, students were expected to complete homework for each
class, write quizzes, and complete a final.
Student evaluation
Marshall distinguished himself in every respect of the class. On his quizzes, homework,
workshops, and test he demonstrated clearly that he understood and was able to apply the
ideas and procedures covered in the class. He asked very carefully thought out questions that
showed he read the text and problems carefully and wanted full understanding of the material,
not just the right answer. Marshall demonstrated excellent group work skills and leadership in
working with others in solving problems. Marshall is exceptionally well prepared to go on to any
further class requiring algebra, trigonometry and good problem-solving skills.
