Student Writing ANALYSIS #1 Goal: Teacher Candidates will identify the leading edge of writing development based on individual student papers. 1. Review workshop notes, handouts, materials about writing development 2. Read the student papers 3. For each student, document on the Spelling Chart (one for each) invented spellings and analyze the type of spelling invention and spelling stage. 4. For each student, use the Ways to Observe list to document on the Writing Observation Chart (one for each) what the student knows in each of the areas (spelling, syntax, punctuation, overall structure). For spelling, make sure to count the total number of words written, note any invented spellings, and indicate what overall developmental stage the inventions demonstrate. 5. Based on what the student demonstrates he/she knows about language use, determine the leading edge of development for instruction. What are the 2 most important areas for the student to work on next. 6. Write a formal letter to the student’s parents/guardians to describe their student’s progress. Clearly state what the child knows how to do, and what areas are the next steps in development.
