ADVANCED CONCEPT TEACHING SPACE INNOVATIVE DEVELOPMENT FUND GUIDELINES PURPOSE The aim of the fund is to further foster innovative teaching and learning practice using the facilities available in the Advanced Concept Teaching Space (ACTS) Building 14, GPN4. This exciting new space offers many opportunities for teaching and learning development and research. This initiative is to support the implementation of the Teaching and Learning Enhancement Plan 2008 – 2010 goal ‘enrich all aspects of the teaching and learning environment’ the promotion and support for the uses of CLTC’s and ACTS being a specific target The Scheme will provide funding to assist with the innovative curriculum design or redesign of teaching and learning practice to foster interactive teaching and learning activities using the facilities in ACTS. Additional funding will be made available to conduct research that will contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning. The Scheme will involve a Faculty/School-based project team/individual working with a staff member from TEDI on curriculum development/redevelopment process. Depending on the nature of the project staff may also involve staff from ITS and CEIT in the research component of the project. NATURE OF THE SCHEME There are two schemes: 1. Curriculum Development of $5,000 per course will be provided for the design or redesign of course curriculum to develop interactive teaching and learning practices that require the specific use of the ACTS room. This funding will be provided on the condition that these funds are matched by Funds from Faculties or Schools. Additional in-kind funding is also welcome. 2. Curriculum Development & Scholarship as above but with an additional amount of $2,500 per project to support extending the curriculum development work to undertake research that will contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning. A maximum of two projects per Faculty will be considered for funding. CONDITIONS 1. Selected projects will focus on developing innovative approaches to designing or redesigning curriculum to foster interactive teaching and learning in ACTS. This may be for a single course or an approach to be applied across a sequence of study. Staff with responsibility for course coordination are encouraged to apply. 2. Each project will be managed by the Project Leader (course coordinator), from the Faculty or School project team. The size of the project team will vary depending on the scope of the project. The team will at least consist of the course coordinator, associated teaching staff and TEDI consultant. The project team will meet periodically to maintain a team focus, and are required to provide a progress report to the ATLS Management Group (with a copy to the Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning)) midway through stage 3 (see Funding Scheme Process). The University of Queensland Page 1 of 4 SELECTION OF PROJECTS Projects will be selected by a panel consisting of the: Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning) or nominee Chair, ATLS Management Group Director, Teaching & Educational Development Institute Director, Centre for Educational Innovation & Technology In the selection process, the panel will consider the following: How the proposed project will foster interactive teaching and learning practice and improve students’ learning experiences and outcomes; The associated curriculum design or redesign Utilisation of the facilities available in ACTS; The development of a coherent and feasible project implementation and completion plan; How the outcomes will be disseminated and likelihood of these outcomes being transferable into other courses and/or other learning spaces. The extent to which the project will involve collaboration between UQ staff in the hope that these projects will be a catalyst for building interest and ideas across the University in the use of ACTS. Evaluation of Projects To successfully evaluate these projects it is expected that student feedback is collected. Such feedback may come from a variety of sources such as surveys, focus groups, continuous feedback/journals etc. Such feedback does not necessarily have to occur at the completion of the project. To assist staff with their evaluation an evaluation report form has been developed and is available for downloading from the T&L Website. Due dates for evaluation reports are: Application Round Round 1 – January 2009 Round 2 – April 2009 Report Due September 2009 January 2010 Responsibilities of Project Leader (a) A Project Leader will be responsible for the overall progress of the project, including the achievement of project milestones, evaluation report and liaison with others involved in the project such as staff in TEDI, ITS or CEIT. The Project Leader will provide a short progress report to the ATLS Management Group (with a copy to the Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning)) approximately midway through stage 3. (b) The Project Leader must be willing to demonstrate/discuss the progress or outcomes of the project at an ACTS Showcase event. Applications 1. Project applications must include a project budget, which identifies: Funds sought from the ACTS Development Fund Scheme Provision of additional funds from faculty/school would be an advantage Value of in-kind support to be provided by the Faculty/Schools How funds will be spent – e.g. to provide teaching relief for the Project Leader and/or other team members; for course development; for resource development The University of Queensland Page 2 of 4 2009 FUNDING SCHEME PROCESS STAGE 1: Application and Selection Process There will be two funding rounds one closing on 23 January which is aimed at those courses to be taught in ACTS in Semester 1 2009 and the second round closing on 24 April for Semester 2, 2009 courses. Issues to consider What major achievements have been made against specified outcomes and deliverables – this might include resources developed? Review of progress. Were there any variations from the processes, outcomes and deliverables that were initially proposed, and if so, why? What lessons have been learnt? What challenges have been met? Indicate if and how these challenges impacted on the outcomes, the timeline or the budget. Please specify. Describe the evaluation/survey processes used and their results What evidence is there of the impact from your project in the identified course, program, at UQ and/or wider? What measures, if any, have been put in place to promote sustainability of the project's focus and outcomes?
