New York City is a Good Place to Move
In this world every person wants a better place to live. Before moving from one place to
another people look for better opportunities. If people get a lot of opportunities in one place they
tend to move to that place in order to get them. New York City offers so many opportunities for
newcomers. New York City has better opportunities for jobs, has good transportation and
communication system. Besides, this city has a good education system and cultural diversity.
Because of these opportunities New York City is a good place to move from another state.
First of all, New York State has better opportunities for jobs. Statistics show that, “The
city gained 50,000 jobs in 1985, reducing the unemployment rate to 8.1 percent and bringing the
job increase since 1977 to an impressive 3000, 000.” In this article we can see this city has very
good job opportunities. Those job opportunities can reduce our unemployment rate, and our city
residents also get benefits from those new job opportunities. When a person comes to this
country they are looking for better jobs to survive. New York City gives inexperienced people a
good opportunity to get a job. For example, this city has so many retail stores, restaurants and
small shops. A person can easily find a job without experience. I can give one example from my
experience. When I first came to this country I lived with my aunt in Texas. There I didn’t find
any jobs, because I was not an experienced person and I couldn’t speak English well enough. I
lived there for three months. When I almost gave up my hope, one of my friends told me to move
to New York. Listening to that friend I moved to New York, and after three days I got a job in a
jewelry store. They didn’t require an experienced person. I was very happy to get that job. Also

we can see in Patrick McGeehan’s article, mayor Michael R. Bloomberg told, that “Our fiveborough economic strategy is creating jobs and opportunities for New Yorkers across the city,
and the fact that unemployment has hit an almost 20- year low is a good sign our efforts are
paying off,” We can see in this article New York City’s unemployment rate reduced from 20
years. This is a top sign for those people who want to get better job opportunities, so it is a best
place to move for job seekers.
In addition, New York City is also a better place for business. For example, if any person
has fifteen thousand dollars in cash they can easily lease a store and run their business. J.
Zamgba Browne also writes about business opportunities in his article. He writes, “Since its
incipiency the center has provided technical and financial assistance to more than 6,000 new and
established business and secured over $200 million in financing and procurement opportunities
for small, minority and women owned businesses”. So we can see in this article, this city has
opportunities for small businesses. Not only men but also women can run their business. If we go
to Queens we can see so many small boutique owned by women. Also I have one friend who has
a personal jewelry store In Jackson Heights, and now she is making a very good amount of
money. So we can see this city has better opportunities for business and local jobs. Also New
York City has so many shopping malls, offices and department stores. Kenneth T. Jackson also
discusses in his essay about business and jobs. He writes, “New York is again the exception.
Despite the loss of Gimbles, B. Altman and Bonwit Teller, the sidewalks of midtown Manhattan
remain crowded and grand emporiums like Macys, Lord and Taylor, Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth
Avenue, Brooks Brothers, Bergdorf Goodman and dozen others continue to enchant window

shoppers as no mall ever could.”(31). We can see from this passage that these shopping malls,
office parks are not only the key of our city people’s entertainment but also key to our society’s
development, because those stores offer people different kinds of jobs, so a person can find a job
without difficulty. If people will find jobs easily then they can concentrate in their work. In that
case our whole city will develop by those working people. In addition, if people get more job
opportunities in New York they will be interested to move to this city.
Secondly, New York City has very good communication and transportation systems. It
provides a broad subway system with so many local buses and taxies. There are many kinds of
transportation in New York, but we can say that the subway is number one in this city. William
Neuman writes in his article, “That report placed the no. 1 line, which runs from south ferry in
lower Manhattan to 242nd street in the Bronx, at the top for the first time, displacing the No. 6
line, which had been rated the best for three years in a row.” From this survey, we can say that
our subway system is the best. If people want to move to this city they can definitely take
advantages of the subway. Also the writer Jesus Rangel writes in his article, “The subways are
not the cleanest transportation system in town, but they are often the fastest and, by any measure,
the safest.” We can see from this article that subway system is faster than other transportation.
Although we don’t have the cleanest transportation, we do have the fastest and safest
transportation. If people need to go early at work place, they need the fastest transportation. In
that case, the subway system is a perfect solution. Also security guards are available in subways,
so it is also safe for us. Kenneth T. Jackson also writes in his essay about public transportation.
He says, “New York is the exception. Its proportion of the nation’s transit riders has doubled in

the 20th Century, and its subways, and buses and commuter trains are used by more people today
than the quarter century ago.”(29). From this passage, we can tell that this city’s people have
been getting benefits from the transportation system for a long time. We can go any place in New
York by taking the subways. The subway system is very helpful for new people who come from
other part of this country. For example, if people come from other states like Texas, California,
or Florida they will need driving skills to survive. Without driving skills they can’t move from
one place to another, but New York City’s subway system helps those people who don’t have
driving skills. Sometimes it takes a while for a family to get a car as their transportation right
after moving. So it helps them both ways.
If the subway system gets stuck we still can use buses and taxies. Recent statists shows,
“New York city transit announced yesterday that it would add 850 hybrid buses to the fleet it
operates with the metropolitan transportation authority.” So we can see from this statistics that
this city provides more buses for its public. If we have more buses in our city we don’t need to
worry about going to work, and the subway and bus fare rate is very cheap, so any person can
afford its cost. However, people will be interested if they see this statistics, also in other states
they don’t have broad bus and subway system. So it is better to move to this city. In addition, if
we see other states gas rate it’s higher than New York City. For example, New York City’s
regular gas price is $4.35 per gallon, but Los Angeles gas price is $6.89 per gallon, and Texas’s
gas price is $5.29 per gallon. So we can see the difference in gas prices between New York and
other states. These examples help me to think that New York City is a better place to move,

because if we find fewer prices for essential products in this city, why pay more in other States?
Therefore, because of good transportation we can say New York City is a smart living place.
Thirdly, New York City’s education system is very good and also very cheap. Although,
this facilities are not the only one in New York we New Yorker thinks these facilities are best for
us. . For example, the CUNY education system gives so many opportunities for underprivileged
and middle class students. The CUNY colleges offer financial aid, scholarships, stipends, and
part time-work. It really helps those students who want to continue their studies at a further level.
Also students in CUNY can apply for student loans, so they can continue their studies. For
example, one of my friends is studying in Queens College. He can’t afford his tuition bills, so his
advisor advised him to apply for student loans. He took out a loan for four years, and after he
finished his bachelor degree his loans will cut from his salary. In this state we have also
opportunities for internships. For example, most of the colleges offer internship programs while
students are studying. Most internship programs are paid; and have a good quality environment
of work. For instinct, last year my cousin did his internship In LaGuardia Community college.
He worked in advisor department. He told everybody were very helpful at his workplace. If he
didn’t know about something, they tried to help him out. So his experience gives me an example
of good environment at work. Marc B. Zawel also writes in his article about good internship
program. He writes, “ Jennifer Tisser, 22, has been working at Kenneth Cole productions in New
York City for almost a year, a job she owes, in part, to summer internship she held there while a
student at Syracuse university. The internship was one of the best experiences I have ever had,
“recalled Ms. Tisser, saying it had provided an opportunity to prove myself.” In that case we can

say New York City’s internship is better for new people who want to move to this city. Those
who want to set up their career New York are one of the best places to establish their career. A
person can start his/her career if he/she has good education, and this city provides better
education for those people. Since New York City’s education system is good and cheap a person
can easily establish his/her career.
In addition, New York State has different cultures. For example, so many people come
from different countries. We have Spanish, Indian, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Chinese, and
Japanese and so on. Mervyn Rothstein writes in his article about cultural diversity. He talked
about Walt Whitman, because Whitman writes about diversity and art. He writes, “The model for
this is Walt Whitman. More than a century ago he discovered the joys of walking around
Manhattan and looking at things and delighting in their diversity. The city is like a piece of
modern art.” He talked about modern art because of these diverse cultures in New York. All of
this diversity gives us a modern cultural society. So we can see comparison between art and
culture. Only in this city we can find more cultural people. Also Kenneth T Jackson said in his
essay, “In recent decades, every important city has become multicultural, multiracial and
multireligious. But New York has never been anything else. As early as the 1640’s, 18 different
languages were already being spoken in colonial New Amsterdam, whose population was still
less than a thousand.”(17). In this quotation we can see how many languages were spoken in
1640’s. It was a long time ago, but now we can still see new cultures in New York City. Those
different cultures teach us different languages, and we can also taste different cultural foods. It
gives us an opportunity for recreation and enjoyment.

Every religion also has different festivals and occasions. For example, Muslims have “Eid”. In
their occasion we see people embrace each other also they send gifts to friends and family. We
see many colorful dresses in that festival. Claudia Gryvatz Copquin and Kenneth T. Jackson
write in their article about corona community. They write, “Corona moves to a Latina beat. With
its unique combinations of Spanish- speaking, Italian and African American influences, this
community knows something about diversity, and it celebrates it every year with popular
summer festivals and closely held unique traditions.” In New York Not only in corona we can
see every where cultural festivals. All of these festivals teach us friendly behavior, which proves
New York City is a great choice to move once again.
Finally, all of these examples help us to consider New York City as a good place to move
to. Newcomers start living here, and go further in the future. Because of job opportunities and
transportation people can move from other states to New York. This city also gives us cultural
diversity and enjoyment. I hope all of these examples will help those people who want to move
in New York City.
