Jin Hui Lu Professor. Pinard CEP 121.2292 Fall 2008 October 10 2008 My Accomplishments For most people, accomplishment might be a great achievement in skill or knowledge. I have two accomplishments related to my working experiences. Even though they might not be so important in some people’ opinion, I think they are quite important for my future career. These two accomplishments involve various working skills, such as outstanding customer service skill, communication skill, and marketing skill. I believe these skills can assist me to achieve my goals in marketing and customer service in the future. I have been working as a waiter for almost three years. From my working experiences in restaurant, I have achieved a few skills about how to be a good waiter that have illuminated me to be successful in other fields. The first skill is to find out the key element that blocks your process to be better in working. According to being a waiter, the key is to study menu and control many other related knowledge about food. What I mean by studying the menu is that waiters should not just remember all the dish names but try to know how the chefs will prepare each meal, such as what kind of materials they will use and how much time they need for each dish. There are three benefits for waiters to study the menu. Firstly, waiters can be much better in managing time to serve customers step by step than those who are not familiar with menu. It is very important for waiters to have a time managing skill because while taking care of many tables at the same time waiters need to make sure every customer’s dishes are ordered, served, and paid on time. Otherwise, their services will get messed up. Complaining, arguing, or refusing to pay check or tips will follow after. Second, knowing menu, a waiter can make an accurate explanation about the food for the customers, such as the differences among dishes, and the characteristic of each dish. Third, knowing the menu, a waiter can help customer to make a choice about what they are going to order according to their favors, tastes, customs, and even their emotions on that day. People should try to be an expert in their fields and control professional knowledge related to their jobs. Another important skill I practiced is how to control my personal feelings and be very patient to our customers. Although sometimes I can’t prospect an unreasonable request from customer and I am really angry about the person, I have to make a very generous response. If I offer a bad service for them, they will feel very disappointed and might get angry. “Customer is always right.” I understand that customers come to the restaurant to enjoy their time and meals, so I always try my best by respecting our customers and satisfying their needs. Working efficiently is also important. I practiced to work fast by paying attention to any movements I made. I tried to walk fast, take more plates, understand customers one time, avoid any mistake, and save energy. I pay attention to everybody and respond them with fast service. Then, my customers feeling they are being taken care of. My fast and accurate services impress our customer and leave them a comfortable dining experience. I believe that “A good meal will be destroyed by an awful waiter, but an awful meal could be served wonderfully by a good waiter.” I used to work as a salesman in selling sports utilities. I have learned a few sales knowledge and skills. For me, the basic thing for a salesman is being sensitive to his or her products and customers. Because salesmen can’t force customers to like their products, they should make a careful choice of their products to favor their customers. It requires people to make a careful and complete market search, and to study their products. Before selling a new product, I tried to found out what the advantages and disadvantages of my products, and how people will respond to them. Learning and sensing are always very important for a salesperson. In this diverse society, people have their different flavors of choosing products. Their choices depend on their age, gender, ethnic groups, or social class. As a salesperson, I always tried to persuade and convince our customer to buy our products. Because I know my products very well, I can pick a proper product for them according to their differences. It is very difficult for a salesperson to sale a right product for a right customer, experience is very important for a salesman. Interpersonal communication is also a fundamental skill for a salesperson. I wasn’t aware of how to communicate with my customers. After being a salesman, I felt standard interpersonal communication is necessary for me when I negotiate with my customer. I always tried to use a standard oral communication to talk with my customers and be very careful about my manner and behavior. I know my behavior also is also part of my products, and my behaviors will influence my products bad or good. Another method for a successful salesperson is having a sensitive awareness about any change happened to the market. It is the most difficult skill for most people. I must be aware of myself, my products, customers, and the response of my product in the marketing because it is an important way to maintain and increase my product’s competitive power in the market. For example, when my customers complained about my product’s quality, I would consider it seriously and investigate the true reason of their complaining, whether the quality is really low, customers are not satisfied with the price, or some other reasons. Being a salesman in the market is the same as being a student in the school in some sense. As a student in college, I never felt my knowledge is enough; as a salesperson, I always tried to discover new skills in the marketing field. My knowledge is never enough for me to be a salesman I feel it is not easy to be a successful salesman, because the marketing and customer are always changing I conclude a few of skills about how to be a good salesman and I believe they will be very useful for me to develop my future career in the marketing field. I am looking forward to working in the marketing and customer service field after I completed my bachelor degree. I deeply feel that I must develop my basic knowledge and concept which relate to my jobs; then I can use knowledge as tools to identify the consequences. Therefore, I can make a right response and adjustment to solve the incident in my jobs. After I worked as a waiter and salesman, I have learned the interpersonal communication skill, customer service skill, and marketing skill. These skills will help me in my future career. .
