Liliana Melo Professor Lucy Sardell CEP 121.2264 November 16, 2006 Career and Transfer Report My name is Liliana Melo. I studied Metallurgical Engineering at La Libre University – Bogotá. I got my Bachelor of Science in Engineering in 1,995. Presently, I am studying Business Administration at LaGuardia Community College. I chose this major because I would like to increase my knowledge of how to lead a company according to American laws and improve my management skills in order to acquire more experience. In fact, I am interested in developing academic knowledge through the following careers: Purchasing Manager and Management Analyst because I can complement my experience as an engineer and my studies in Business Administration. If I work as a purchasing manager, I will have the following job duties: directs and coordinates activities of personnel engaged in buying, selling, and distributing materials, equipment, and supplies; prepares report regarding market conditions and merchandise costs; analyzes market and delivery systems to determine present and future material availability; represents company in formulating policies and negotiating contracts with suppliers; develops and implements office, operations, and systems instructions; determines merchandise costs and formulates and coordinates merchandising policies; and conducts inventory and directs buyers in purchase of products, materials, and supplies. However, it is frequently that this occupation requires a four - year bachelor's degree, and work-related experience, and vocational training. In NY the average wage for this occupation is $55,485 for entry level workers and $114,125 for experienced workers. Nowadays, companies require that their purchasing managers have good skills in planning, directing, or coordinating any kind of activities with the buyers and suppliers. In order to work in this position, it is necessary to have the following skills: active listening, critical thinking, judgment and Decision Making, reading, management of material resources and negotiation. Finally, I think that I have some of these skills, but I need to improve my English as a second language (speaking fluently) and put in practice my administration and management skills. Alternately, if I get a job as a management analyst, the company will give me the following job duties: reviews forms and reports; gathers and organizes information on problems or procedures; ensures successful functioning of newly implemented systems or procedures with the new personnel; analyzes data gathered and develops solutions or alternative methods of proceeding; develops and implements records management program for filing, protection, and retrieval of records, and assures compliance with program; and prepares manuals and trains workers in use of new forms, reports, procedures or equipment, according to organizational policy. In the same way, this occupation needs people not only with four-year bachelor’s degree and certifications in continuous improvement programs; but also with several years of work-related experience. By working as a management analyst, people are required to have skills such as good writing and reading comprehension, effective communication through a fluent speaking, assertive systems evaluation, active listening, and critical thinking. In NY the average wage for this occupation is $ 46,131 for entry level workers and $94,823 for experienced workers. Through my life experience, I have enhanced some of these skills; nevertheless, this experience has been by using my native language (Spanish). As a result, if I want any of these jobs, I need not only to practice my English speaking in order to increase my selfconfidence; but also to go to a four-year college in order to get a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. In order to get a degree in Business Administration, I plan to transfer my credits to Baruch College (CUNY) or Pace University (a private university in NYC) when I get my associate degree in Business Administration. Baruch College offers three specializations in management: entrepreneurship and small business management (ENT), human resource management (HRM), and operations management (OM). However, I would like to study entrepreneurship and small business management or operations management because they offer me a career in business and industry that I will be able to complement with my studies and experience in engineering. According to Baruch tuition, New York State Residents pay $2,000 per semester and $170 per credit, and Out-of-State Residents and Foreign Students on Temporary Visas pay $360 per credit (they do not have a cost per semester). In addition, Baruch has some programs to get scholarships. For example, the Baruch College Fund (BCF) offers privately endowed or restricted scholarship funds administered by the Office of Financial Aid. Also, it has other scholarships such as Baruch Incentive Grant, Presidential Incentive Grant, and Presidential Scholarship. Finally, I feel interested in this College because it offers me a major and specializations at the same time with an inexpensive tuition to achieve a bachelor’s degree in management, and it has programs in Master’s Degree in Management. Alternately, Pace University actually offers a Bachelor of Science/Master of Business Administration that the students can combine their undergraduate degree with the following M.B.A. concentrations: Accounting, Financial Management, Information Systems, International Business, International Economics, Management, Management Science, and Marketing Management. So, I would like to apply in a management major because I can enhance my studies for employment in the fields of finance, management, and other business areas. Pace University has estimated educational cost budgets of full-time per year so: for resident student $42,406; commute student $36,216; and for independent / off campus student $48,556. In order to help students pay their tuitions, Pace University has four types of financial aid available: scholarships, grants, on-campus employment and loans. In fact, “Universitysponsored scholarships are awarded to students on the basis of academic merit, service to the community and financial need” (Pace Scholarship Program). As a result, Pace is very interesting since provides methods for recording and explaining ideas in science, engineering, business, and other fields, as well as for verifying theories about the world throughout its Bachelor of Science/Master of Business Administration program. In conclusion, I would like to continue studying in order to complete four- year colleges in Business Administration since I think that I have the skills and knowledge required to work as a Purchasing Manager or Management Analyst. I fact, I have to prepare and plan my following step in my academic life, and improve and develop some skills to get one of these careers. As a result, I have been looking for more information about how to transfer to a four-year college and the requisites needed in order to make the best decision in my future career.
