Tasks and Responsibilities:

Where are you completing your internship?
I am completing my internship at the Teaching and Learning Center of LaGuardia
Community College.

What are your responsibilities?
As a STM I have many responsibilities. Such as:

Maintain professional mannerisms at all times.

Assisting faculty in designing, creating and maintaining technology enhanced
tools and resources for their classroom. Examples would include:
o PowerPoint Presentations.
o Creating web pages with Dreamweaver.
o Manage courses in Blackboard.
o Creating documents.
o Assist in the development of ePortfolios.
o Assist in the development of Digital Stories.

Assist students with technology in the classroom or lab.

Develop new knowledge and skills using technology.

Use
available
resources
to
get
help
in
solving
technology
related
problems/questions.

Assist professors with technology related surveys.

Mentor faculty and students through providing technology based information.

We are expected to be at our assigned position every day and be on time. If we are
unable to attend our assigned position, we are expected to notify our supervisor
immediately.
Interpersonal Interactions:

How did you feel in your new environment?
I have mix feelings about this new environment. I feel excited, nervous, welcome,
and comfortable; it depends on who I am working with and what is it that I am
doing.

What made you feel this way? Describe the experience or experiences that
generated the feelings that you experienced in your new internship
environment.
Few years ago when I first came to New York, I couldn’t even speak English.
From my very childhood I was very quite and shy, so it was very hard for me to
open up, it still is. I wasn’t very good at class participation ever because of my
shyness. Being a foreign student and not able to speak English properly always
made me feel bad. I used to work in a place where I didn’t have to speak English
that much. So my spoken English never improved. But now when I get to help

students, English is the one and only language that I speak because I have no
other choice. I hope the more I speak English, the more it will be improved. The
professors and faculty members I am working with made me feel welcome and
comfortable in this new environment. Before this internship, I wasn’t very
comfortable using computer either. I was more into paper and pen than computer.
This internship is helping me to be a savvy computer user. So far, in the STM
training session I have learned Adobe Photoshop, Fire Works, I am also making a
digital movie using movie maker and learning how to manage courses in
Blackboard and Html. I can’t wait to learn Dreamweaver. Only time I get nervous
is when other students think STMs are so smart that they know everything.

How did your new co-workers treat and react to you?
My new co-workers are very friendly and comfortable to work with. Everyday as
new STMs we face some sorts of problem while we are working. Every time we
get stuck we go to senior STMs or IDAs for help. They are so helpful that they
never hesitate to help us. They always encourage us by saying we will be good
STMs.
Your Presentation:

How did you present yourself to people while on the internship?
I present myself as a very friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic person while I am on
the internship. I try to be patient when students make same mistakes over and
over.

 Do you think people perceived you to be responsible, helpful, intelligent, and
positive? If so, provide specific examples of situations that led you to think
this. If not, why not?
Yes, I think when people see us as Student Technology Mentor, they
automatically think of us as smart, computer fluent, and intelligent person. When
I work in ePortfolio lab, I see students come there very frustrated because they
can’t remember the steps of building an ePortfolio. They get amazed when we
help them with their ePortfolio and the patience we show while they make same
mistakes over and over. What they don’t know is we are trained to help them; we
practiced it over and over to be able to help them.

In what ways might you want to modify your presentation of yourself for
better results?
I want to gain more knowledge about computer so that I can be an efficient
worker in my work place.
Theoretical Application and Analysis:

Which of the experiential learning theories (the theories concerning the ways
in which learning can be derived from experience) were most applicable (or
struck you as relevant) when you compared them to your own experience of
learning from your internship experience? Why? Provide examples to
support your answer. (Refer to the theories of Dewey, Kolb, Suezle &
Borzak.)

Theories of Dewey were most applicable when I compared them to my own
experience of learning from my internship experience. Before I started working as
an STM, I used to observe other STMs critically. Once in a while, I asked other
STMs about their job and the stress that they go through while working. They also
advised me about certain situation that I am going to face as an STM. Their
knowledge and experience helped me to deal with certain situation in my own
way.

How will you use your knowledge of experiential learning theories and
principles, or your knowledge of the “Stages of Fieldwork”, to enhance your
learning on the internship and make the most of your internship
experiences?
To enhance my learning on the internship and make the most of my internship
experience, I will try to observe other senior STMs and how they deal with
different situations. Based on my own experience and with a little help of other
senior STMs, I will try to improve my computer skills. Thus, I will be a valuable
employee of this organization.
Evaluation

What were some of your successes on your internship?
It has been only two weeks that I started my internship so I haven’t been able
to gain a lot of successes within two weeks. The professor I am working with
wanted me to make a banner that has pictures of her students and upload it in
her blackboard site. We didn’t learn it yet in out STM training session, but

with help of a senior STM I successfully made a banner and upload it in my
professor’s blackboard site. I am also helping students to build their ePortfolio
very confidently.

What were some of your frustrations, difficulties, or adjustments on your
internship?
I didn’t have problem to adjust in this new environment. One of my
frustrations is wherever I am working I am the only STM there so when
twenty out of thirty students raise their hand at once for help its difficult to
help them all. Sometime I am working over time for those students even
though I don’t have to. My own studies are in jeopardy now.

What have you learn from your success and frustrations?
I learned from my success no matter how hard it is to remember something, if
I practice a lot I will be able to remember it. I also learned I won’t be able to
learn application software programs unless I give it a try. So I play around
with a software program, make mistakes and I learn from my mistakes. On the
other hand, from my frustrations I didn’t learn anything yet.

What were your learning objectives for the internship?
Enhancing my computer skills and learning new application software
programs were my learning objectives for the internship.

How has your experience differed from your expectations of the
internship?

I thought whatever we learned and still learning in the training session would
be enough to help students and faculty. But, I was wrong. Sometimes I face
some problems that I never faced before and don’t know how to solve it. Then
I rush to senior STMs to learn how to solve that problem. So, I am giving
more time for this internship than I thought I will actually give.

At this point, what do you think you will be able to learn you’re your
experience on the internship?
At this point, I think I will be able to learn how to deal with problems and
stress in the workplace. I think I will also learn how to make healthy
relationship with co-workers.
