Using the handout- “Florence Nightingale Principles for Nurses”
and previous readings on historical figures in nursing from
textbook discuss Florence’s Principles in your small group. Then
in a 150 –200 words reflective essay consider and discuss three of
Nightingale’s Principles as they relate to today’s nursing
practice. Be creative in your response.
In today’s society, most people want to major in nursing,
which prior to the 1800, society regarded nursing as a housecleaning job. Also in the 1800 only women were taking care of the
sick, but thanks to one of the pioneers, Florence Nightingale who
joined the nursing school in the 1851, nursing care providers are
now treated differently. During the war, Nightingale became known
as lady of the lamp because of her lamp she had always held while
caring for the sick. As a caregiver, Nightingale came up with
dozens of principles for nurses. Three of those principles are:
prevention is better than cure, the nurse must work as a member of
the team and self-discipline and self-evaluation are important.
As a nurse we should know by now taking care of one’s body
can protect us from many diseases. In her one of the principles
for nurses, Nightingale acknowledged that prevention is better
