Summary: Print showing the Pilgrims, below deck on the
Mayflower, signing the Mayflower Compact.
1) Students need to understand that this
painting/engraving, created many years after the
event, is not a primary source of that time
2) The artists’ interpretation of the signing of the
Mayflower compact can be analyzed in terms of
purpose and accuracy.
3) As students learn about the Mayflower
compact this can provide a visual “decoding” of
earlier times.
