MATERIAL FOR THE LAND MOBILE HANDBOOK ON THE DEPLOYMENT
OF BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS SYSTEMS
ITU-R Working Party 8A is currently drafting Volume 5 of the Land Mobile Handbook (including
wireless access), entitled “Deployment of broadband wireless access (BWA) systems” in the mobile
service. See Attachment 1, which contains the draft outline.1
For guidance, the ITU-R definition of a handbook is as follows:
6.1.7
Handbook
A text which provides a statement of the current knowledge, the present position of studies, or of
good operating or technical practice, in certain aspects of radiocommunications, which should be
addressed to a radio engineer, system planner or operating official who plans, designs or uses radio
services or systems, paying particular attention to the requirements of developing countries. It
should be self-contained, require no familiarity with other ITU Radiocommunication texts or
procedures, but should not duplicate the scope and content of publications readily available outside
the ITU.

At its June 2007 meeting, WP 8A agreed to solicit contributions from external organizations for
inclusion in this handbook (Volume 5 of the Land Mobile Handbook (LMH) series.) A
Correspondence Group has been set up to undertake work on the handbook and contributions
should provide the following:
1)
generic information on system deployment and architecture, operational requirements,
service environment, applications, technologies, etc. of BWA systems for sections 2-6 of
the handbook.

information on the deployment of radio interface technologies that are listed in ITU-R
Recommendation M.1801: Radio interface standards for broadband wireless access
systems, including mobile and nomadic operations, in the mobile service operating below
6 GHz for Annex B of the handbook;
links to documentation on the standards, relevant reports and White Papers, etc. for
Annex D of the handbook.
It is suggested that any contribution for Annex B on a specific standard and system be limited to
approximately five pages. Information is requested on the following issues: overview of the
standard/technology, air interface, system architecture and deployment, associated infrastructure,
etc. Comparisons with other technologies must be avoided.
Please forward the information to the Rapporteur and the Editor of the Land Mobile Handbook with
a clear indication of the source.
