Project Proposal Narrative: Please answer in detail the following questions about your
summer research project in a separate document. Please use these headings in your
document. These questions are based on the UNC Institutional Review Board application.
A. Purpose and Significance:
Provide a clear statement of the question(s) being asked, or hypothesis(es) being tested, and
supporting rationale. Stating that “more research is needed on this topic” will be of little help.
Explain why more research is needed. What are the potential benefits of the research? Note that
a complete literature review is not necessary. Please do not copy and paste thesis proposal
sections. Most statements of purpose can be adequately explained in less than a page.
B Methods: Be specific when addressing the following items.
1.
Please state the methodology for your project. If it is not a typical research project, be specific
here about how you will conduct your project. Provide detail about participants, data collection,
analysis and handling in the questions below. In this section focus on stating the overarching
methodology or framework for your study. Include what disciplines, theories and/or philosophical
or epistemological foundations are informing your work.
2. Participants – If you are using participants please answer this question. If not please skip and go
to B.2.
a. Describe sampling procedures, sample size, and the characteristics of your sample.
Be sure to address the age(s) of participants; whether or not participants come from
a vulnerable population (e.g., children or adolescents, individuals with cognitive
disabilities, pregnant women, and prisoners); the exact source(s) for all
participants; how participants will be initially contacted.
b. Please specify if IRB approval has already been obtained, and if not, what is the
timeline for IRB submission and whether the IRB will be exempt, expedited or fullboard.
2. Data Collection Procedures – Provide a step by step protocol of all data collection, whether
involving participants or not. Stipulate the nature of all data to be collected. For example, rather
than saying that “subjects will be observed” and “artifacts will be collected,” specify what will be
observed, and specify the nature of the artifacts.
3. Data Analysis Procedures
Describe what will be done to the data after it has been collected. How will you address your
questions/hypotheses? A brief explanation of the statistical design may be helpful to reviewers,
if applicable. If you are using qualitative designs, please be specific about what you are looking
for in the data and how you will draw your conclusions.
4. Data Handling Procedures – Describe where data will be stored, who will have access to data, how
the identity of participants, if applicable, will be protected (e.g., data will be recorded by geographical
area or group rather than by individuals, numeric identifiers will be used for interview or field data,
records will be stored in locked file cabinets etc.). Describe any special arrangements to protect the
safety of atypical populations (e.g., hospital patients, developmentally disabled, young children,
prisoners, etc.).
C. Other Grant Information (if applicable)
If the study is, or will be, funded by a grant other than this summer stipend, please explain fully.
Explain any restrictions imposed by the grantor.
D. Budget
Include the full budget for your project stating the sources of funds for the various items. You
may only request up to $250 for supplies. Note in your budget for which supplies you are
requesting reimbursement.
E. Supervision, hours and location
Provide details regarding the level of oversight and supervision that will be provided by the
faculty research advisor or others involved. Also, specify the number of hours per week that you
expect to spend on the research. (For a summer stipend of $750, an average of 10 hours per
week for 8 weeks would be typical. A minimum of 75 hours total is required for the $750 full
amount). If not in previous sections, include where the research collection and analysis will
predominantly take place (e.g. In a lab, at your home, in the field, etc.)
