Nature and Purpose of Agency
Heart Share Human Services of NY is a non-profit human services agency dedicated to bettering the lives of
people in need of special services and support. Heart Share is a dynamic, caring agency serving children,
adults and families city-wide. First Step serves children from three through five years of age.
Tasks Available for Students
First step has preschool classrooms for children with varied special needs, i.e. speech and language
delays/disorders, cognitive impairments, social emotional delays and autism spectrum disorders. Students
from St. John’s will have an opportunity to directly work in the classrooms. First Step has integrated
classrooms, self contained classrooms, including several designed to meet the needs of the autistic learner.
Time Requirements
 Only accepts 15 or less students
 2 hours a week for 10 weeks
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
 Medical form (on file) Department of Health Medical completed within last year; form is attached.
 Interview with Assistant Director required
 Copy of updated medical, TB and physical exam within the year must be presented on first day of
service. Please complete the attached memo at the end of this packet and bring to the Health Office in
DaSilva Hall for copies of your medical records; free of charge).

fee of $134.00

Take the “A” train to Lefferts Blvd. Walk 2 blocks North of the station to 101 Ave. The school is on the corner
between 116th and 115th Street.
From the Jamaica Bus terminal, take the Q8 which runs on 101 Ave to 177th street stop.
Driving Directions
From Manhattan
Take the Grand Central Parkway to the Van Wyck Expressway South towards Kennedy Airport. Take the Van
Wyck to the Atlantic Ave. exit. Stay on the service road of the Van Wyck to 101 Ave. and make a RIGHT.
Stay on 101 Ave. about 2 miles to the school. School will be on the right, between 116th and 115th Street.
From Long Island
Take the Belt Parkway west towards Kennedy Airport to the Van Wyck Expressway North to Liberty Ave. exit.
Take the service Road of the Van Wyck upon exiting past Liberty Ave. to 101 ave. Make a LEFT. The school
is about 2 miles on the Right, between 116th and 115th street

Nature and Purpose of Agency
Public School 51, Early Childhood Center, strives to create the best opportunity for all students to learn in a

Tasks Available for Students
Observe and assist the Speech Therapist and/or classroom teachers in improving student performance in the
areas of speech, voice, fluency, pragmatics, language and oral motor skills.
Time Requirements
 2 students per semester
 Monday through Thursday anytime between 8:00am-2:20pm.
 2 hours a week for 10 weeks
 Will begin 1st week in October
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
 Please contact the Parent Coordinator, Andrea Kelly, early in the semester to schedule your service
and let her know which program you would like to serve with and when you are available to serve.

A recent PPD test is required to serve at the school. You must have had this test completed
within the last 12 months to serve at PS 51Q. Your medical records can be provided free of charge by
bringing the Medical Records release form to the nurse in DaSilva Hall. This form can be picked up from your
professor, from the Office of AS-L in Lourdes Hall, or printed from our website.

Volunteers are needed for recreational Activities, homework help, socialization, medical day care and more.


20-30 students

Monday through Friday 9am-2pm 4pm-6pm.

Nature and Purpose of Agency
Non-profit child care center for New York State employees and the community at large serving children
between the ages of 8 weeks and five years of age. Our objectives are to promote physical, social,
emotional, and cognitive skills through the use of developmentally appropriate materials and activities.
Tasks Available for Students
One-to-one or small groups work with children between 2 and 5 years of age in various learning centers
within classrooms.
Time Requirements
Monday-Friday
9 am – 12 pm
2:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Seaman’s Society for Children and Families

service with Seaman’s Society.
Nature and Purpose of Agency
Seaman’s Society provides services and support to people living in Staten Island and
Brooklyn. Services include foster care and adoption, youth programs and domestic
violence prevention.
Tasks Available for Students
Reading help for 1st through 12th graders; most of the kids are involved in other Seaman’s Society
programs.
Time Requirements
Reading help: Monday through Friday 3:00 to 5:00 (2 hours a week for 10 weeks)
Can accept up to 25 students to work one on one with students at Seaman’s
Student Awareness/Special Instructions
 Students are required to serve a minimum of 3 full shifts at this site. The procedure now is
that all students must do a background check and get fingerprinted. Upon arrival the
students will have to fill out a form with Andrea Montalvo to do a background check. After
doing so, the students will be permitted to begin working and tutoring that same day.
Additionally, Andrea Montalvo will also provide students with information of where to get
fingerprinted. The students must schedule their fingerprinting prior to their 2nd visit at the site.
