Our guest speaker this meeting was Birgit Sommer with Rainbow Wildlife Rescue, located in
Stephenville, Erath County, Texas and Paula Prater with ECHS, Erath County Humane Society. These wonderful ladies created an amazing presentation for our club. They explained what a wildlife rehabilitator is, and how it is home based, surviving on strictly donations because the animals are state owned. People who do this for a living are not in it for the money; it is a passion and a commitment for these rehabilitators who front the bills out of their own pockets all while not being paid a thing for everything they do for the animals that come to them. Birgit said “The government requires us to be trained in order to obtain the necessary permits, provide proper facilities which are subject to inspection in most states, provide release sites, even pay for own pre-exposure rabies shots.” They do so much just from the purity of their hearts, without any help from the county, state or government, even though they are required to be certified for everything they do. Needless to say, it was informative with pictures of the animals they have taken care of and those currently there, full of
stories good and bad, a real tear jerker. But the most amazing part of it all was to see the recoveries of those they have saved and returned to the wild or had been given a good home. Thank you soo much ladies!
