I am writing to explain further the Department’s request to create a new course called Advanced
Commercial Music Forum.
Graduate students are required to work on the Hoot/Wisdom record label each semester in residence.
This course provides them with critical experiences in planning, production, marketing and advertising
of music recordings. Regularly having students enrolled and working on the record label also ensures
that products are being continually released – regular and successful record releases are an important
part of the success of the commercial music program.
The requirement to work on the label was difficult to enforce and administer without an actual named
course. With this new course, even though it is zero credit, faculty will be able to ensure that students
are enrolled, regularly progressing through the requirements, and will be able to assess their work on the
label more meaningfully.
