NAME: _____________________________ Due date: __________________ 8th Grade SpringBoard Embedded Assessment 1.2 : Jonas’s Hero Journey Assignment: Your assignment is to create a visual representation, in the form of a graphic novel(story board), connecting events from the text, The Giver, to stages and steps of a hero’s journey. Your visual representation should include 6-8 scenes/panels that include images and text (drawings, quotes, details, and examples) to graphically represent events from Jonas’s journey away from the community to Elsewhere. Steps: 1. Connect Jonas’s journey to the 10 hero’s journey steps by completing the hero’s journey (rough draft) CHART. Use your notes from p. 27-29 to help you complete the chart. Identify at least two steps in each stage of the hero’s journey for your graphic novel. 2. On posterboard: Create a STORYBOARD for Jonas’s journey that consists of 6-8 scenes (one panel per step)( do at least 6 panels for a C, 7 panels for a B, and 8 panels for an A, quality of work is required). Make sure that your graphics/illustrations correctly represent the steps of the hero’s journey. Use color, framing, and angles to enhance the meaning of each panel or scene. 3. A) Each scene/panel should use text boxes to explain HOW the event represents that STEP in the hero’s journey. B) Each scene/panel should include at least one dialogue balloon with relevant and accurate QUOTES from the novel to explain the step of the hero’s journey stage. C) Each scene/panel should explain your use of framing, angles, and lighting (or color) --- explain how they emphasize the point you want to make in your scene. 4. Clearly label/title each panel with the specific HERO JOURNEY step represented in the hero’s journey. 5. Create a title for your graphic novel.
