Radiology Pilot Research Grants Guidelines The Radiology Pilot Research Grant program was developed to encourage original, investigatorinitiated research in the Department of Radiology and to stimulate the development of grant applications submitted to external funding agencies. Up to $20,000 is available to support pilot studies that address imaging or intervention issues including improved diagnosis, better treatment, patient safety, outcomes, and radiologist training. Eligibility Department of Radiology Adult Radiologists and Research Faculty are eligible. Quality control/ quality improvement studies that are for hospital improvement only and will not lead to future grant applications are not eligible. Prospective studies are preferred but retrospective studies will be considered if they would lead to a prospective investigation. It is expected that the PI discuss the proposal with personnel before listing them c. Funds can be used for software, hardware, and other operating expenses. d. Type may be no more than six lines per inch. Margins should be ½” wide. Applications that do not comply with these requirements or that do not follow the grant application and biosketch formats will be returned. Application Review Applications will first undergo an administrative review for completeness and adherence to guidelines. Scientific review will be conducted by Radiology Department Research Review Committee and external experts in fields applicable to the proposals received. Review criteria will include significance, scientific merit, innovation, investigators, and likelihood of future funding. Multidisciplinary, collaborative proposals are encouraged. Funded investigators will be asked to submit an interim progress report 6 months after initiating the study and a final report of the results within 1 month of the completion of data analysis. Personal Statement I have the expertise, leadership, training, expertise and motivation necessary to successfully carry out the proposed research project. I have a broad background in psychology, with specific training and expertise in ethnographic and survey research and secondary data analysis on psychological aspects of drug addiction. My research includes neuropsychological changes associated with addiction. As PI or co-Investigator on several university- and NIH-funded grants, I laid the groundwork for the proposed research by developing effective measures of disability, depression, and other psychosocial factors relevant to the aging substance abuser, and by establishing strong ties with community providers that will make it possible to recruit and track participants over time as documented in the following publications. In addition, I successfully administered the projects (e.g. staffing, research protections, budget), collaborated with other researchers, and produced several peerreviewed publications from each project. As a result of these previous experiences, I am aware of the importance of frequent communication among project members and of constructing a realistic research plan, timeline, and budget. The current application builds logically on my prior work. During 2005-2006 my career was disrupted due to family obligations. Contribution to Science Methadone maintenance has been used to treat narcotics addicts for many years but I led research that has shown that over the long-term, those in methadone treatment view themselves negatively and they gradually begin to view treatment as an intrusion into normal life. Elderly narcotics users were shown in carefully constructed ethnographic studies to be especially responsive to tailored social support networks that allow them to eventually reduce their maintenance doses and move into other forms of therapy.
