ERASMUS link with Oldenburg University, Germany The ERASMUS programme allows both staff and students to study at partner Universities, one of the links we have is with Oldenburg University in Germany. Students from geography, biology, ecology and forensic science would all fit into the programme of study well. About the Department of Biology and Environmental Science Oldenburg has a different approach to Staffordshire University in terms of named awards. There is one named award at undergraduate level – BSc Environmental Science, but within that there are multiple streams that students can take to get specialist knowledge. It is a multi disciplinary approach. Details will be available soon of the award structure and available modules. Students – usually go to Oldenburg University for a semester. The CATS points the students accumulate can be counted towards their degree. Masters students are eligible for the exchange. As well as an orientation week for international students before term starts there is a also a regular group that meets for activities with international students throughout the semester. Living costs There is no charge for student fees, however you do have to pay for accommodation and living expenses. Students pay 160 Euros into a community fund which provides the following: a. Free travel in Lower Saxony for 6 months by bus or train b. Access to subsidised housing for students It is estimated that students will spend between 600 and 700 euros per month depending on the rent they pay and their lifestyle. Language issues Within the geography department staff have agree that if any British students go to study they will teach the classes in English. Students can go over for an intensive German for Beginners course a month early, this costs 100 euros. This has been designed to meet international student's needs. Language courses available throughout the semester and these are free. You can earn up to 10 CATS points for completing a language course Oldenburg "Oldenburg has a population of 160,000 and 320,000 bikes." Situated in Northern Germany, near the city of Bremen it is the only city in Germany currently experiencing population growth. This seems to be occurring due to the high quality of life there, low crime, a high quality environment, strong cultural activities and a population that cycles everywhere make it an attractive place to live.
