MINUTES Associate Deans and Academic Support Group Meeting November 6, 2007 8:30 – 10:00 am CU 299 Present: Laura Goodwin, Sara Potter, Rene Galindo, Paul Rakowski, John Lanning, Tammy Stone, Frank Sanchez, JC Bosch, Pam Erickson, Christine Stroup-Benham, Cliff Young, Yuk Lee, Barb Edwards, Lynette Michael, Linda Olson, Danielle Zieg, Cynthia Hashert, Patty Godbey, Linda deLeon, Traci Sage, Lissa Gallagher, Carolyn North The minutes from the 10.16.07 meeting were approved. Announcements/Introductions: Dr. Carolyn North, the new Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Affairs, discussed her priorities for the Office of International Education. She will be meeting with the deans on both campuses to discuss strategies for international education and related issues. The major points were: An inventory of activities and programs with an international focus will be conducted next spring. Other priorities include: the development of policies; fostering of partnerships and collaborations across schools and college; enhancing undergraduate experience via international activities; and exposing us to best practices at other institutions. Calendar Items: Chancellor’s Symposium, Monday, November 19, 7:30am to 1pm, Auditorium, Education 2 South Building in the newly completed Education Zone, at Anschutz Medical Campus (see map) RVSP at 303-315-4252 Discussion Items: 1. Draft Strategic Plan (handout): Laura informed the group that the draft plan will remain a draft for comments, suggestions and feedback for the month of November. The group had several comments and suggestions about the draft plan, which Laura will summarize and send to Mark and Rod. Areas of concern and questions included: How will feedback be collected and used? Can Mark and Rod prepare a video presentation to use as the introduction for discussions in schools, colleges, and administrative units? Arts and Humanities are not well represented in the document. Some aspects of the document are too health-focused. There is a relative lack of focus on people (vs. facilities, funding, etc.) Multi-disciplinary examples should include some that are specific to the downtown campus. Internationalizing the university should be a “value-driven” goal. The words used (and wording of some goals) need careful editing. Where possible, focus on students first. Next Steps: Laura asked that additional comments be sent to her, especially specific “track changes.” 2. DNC updates: Auraria Library: Cynthia reported that the library administration discussed possible options for library access during the DNC. She said that the library is not sure of the perceived needs of the students during that week. The library may reduce operational hours to 9a-5p, and will likely ask for a security person to check ID’s as people enter the library. The group asked about satellite library access at Campus Village. Next Steps: Cynthia will ask library administration to develop recommendations for Laura to take to the AHEC Committee. Educational Opportunities: It is likely that organized outdoor activities will be suspended during the DNC. The AHEC policy committee is requesting feedback from all three institutions regarding a possible ban on indoor activities. The possible suspension of indoor activities could affect internship opportunities; faculty guided discussion groups, and needs of international students. Having access to an off-site building might be preferable; the group also suggested increased use of technology. On-line classes: Patty said that the ATEL office will be open and will treat the week like Spring Break and Fall Break. Other: HR is working on guidelines for employees. Danielle said that the AHEC website with FAQs is going to be linked to cudenver’s website soon. There will be many special concerns related to international students. Information Items: Christine handed out a card with the fall census enrollment numbers. Carolyn handed out a card describing International Week, November 1217th. Danielle reminded the group to sign up for emergency alerts.
