* Dissertation Title: Phenology, Monitoring and Management of the Cabbage Maggot, Delia radicum (L.) in Brassica Crops
Professional Goals and Career Emphasis
Design, implementation and management of integrated pest management (IPM) programs emphasizing a
systems approach and biologically-based control strategies. I specialize in arthropod life biology, behavior,
and ecology (i.e. landscape design), monitoring, biological control, transfer of technology, and measuring
impact while identifying limitations of grower adoption of IPM practices. Education and outreach activities
play an important role in my programs. Current teaching responsibilities involve guest lecturing, hands-on
workshops, field demonstrations, and international extension activities.
Professional Experience
 Research and Extension IPM Entomologist
(Asst. Professor-Senior Research; Oregon State – Crop and Soil Science Dept.; 2006 – present)
Investigate, develop, and evaluate sustainable and biologically-based pest management strategies on a
statewide level for soil and foliar arthropod insects, mites, and mollusks in commercial agriculture including
grapes, hops, vegetables, berry and stone fruits, grasses grown for seed and cereal pastures, nuts, canola and
camelina, and home urban. Extend information via hands-on workshops and trainings, professional and
grower presentations in all aspects of applied entomology and insect pest management programs for
extension agents, growers, agricultural consultants, field reps, community, and for re-certification of pesticide
consultants/applicators. Currently I am focusing my efforts on a 5-year project with 1.0FTE funding (20102015) for monitoring and managing spotted wing Drosophila in small berries and stone fruits.
 Faculty Extension-Research Entomologist
(Research Associate; Oregon State – Horticulture Dept.; 2000–2005)
Coordinated a 5-year IPM project in the Brassica vegetable cropping system. The program brought together
growers, researchers, field reps, and consultants: to reduce pesticide dependence (organophosphates) on
control of pests in cole crop production, primarily Delia radicum; Tested, implemented and validated IPM
strategies; Educated growers about IPM techniques and technologies; and measured IPM progress.
Program (MagNet) was internationally-recognized for its achievements in the Brassica world.
 Statewide Master Gardener Program Assistant and Entomologist
(Oregon State – Hort. Dept.; 1997-2003)
Designed and conducted trainings and workshops on insect ID, plant problem diagnosis and use of IPM
strategies. Developed and enhanced existing Master Gardener training materials, program design and
leadership, and helped facilitate conferences and dissemination of newsletters, statewide.
 IPM International Consultant and Private Contracting
(Nepal, Morocco, Africa, West Indies; 2007, 1997-1998; 1991-1992, 1986-1988)
Led IPM research and awareness campaigns targeting Extension personnel, Agricultural advisors, and
farmers growing vegetables, flowers, millet, and sugarcane. Promoted and tested sustainable, low-input
principles and IPM strategies; rediscovered and shared local traditional practices for pest control; provided
extensive training sessions employing visual aids, on-farm workshops, and surveys; presented safe pesticide
techniques. Conducted a fruit fly detection and survey program and produced a 100-page illustrative
manual published through USDA-APHIS.
Program Support (Grant monies exceeding $7M; Co-PI or PI)
Supported by: Western Specialty IPM-PIPE-IPPC (1), NIFA-USDA-SCRI (1), SEPA-PESP (3), USDA/CSREES
