1. Call to Order: 2:45pm (Jim Knittel presiding)
2. Introductions:
Jim Knittel (chair) invited everyone to introduce themselves and state their school. New
members were asked to identify themselves as a new member.
3. Approval of the Minutes: The minutes from the AACP 2013 Section of Teachers of
Chemistry Business Meeting were circulated. A motion was made to approve the minutes, it
was seconded and the Section voted unanimously to accept the minutes.
4. Invited Guests
Ellen Woods – President and Secretary, American Foundation for Pharmaceutical
Education (AFPE).
Ms. Woods gave an update on the AFPE initiatives. She encouraged members to view the
AFPE site and review the awards and fellowships offered to students and faculty. These have
greatly expanded in the past year. She also encouraged members to volunteer to serve as
subject experts for various projects and grants in the coming year. Information about
volunteering can be found on the website www.afpenet.org/
Mario Sindaco, a representative from the USP, encouraged members to consider volunteering
as an expert for a USP committee. Members of the expert committees serve five year terms
beginning in June 2015. A call for candidates will continue through April 2015. The purpose of
his visit was to recruit volunteers as they need 900 experts to populate 26 committees.
Members were encouraged to visit the USP booth during open exhibition hours. Expert
Committee lists to be populated in the 2015-2020 cycle can be found here:
http://www.usp.org/sites/default/files/usp_pdf/EN/2015-2020_ecschart.pdf
5. Chair’s Report (Jim Knittel)

An attendance sheet was circulated.





A “request for volunteers” sheet was also circulated. Members were asked to sign up for
committees, as abstract reviewers or as 2015 New Investigator Award application
reviewers.
As is customary, the chair invited everyone to a group dinner scheduled at Love and
War in Texas, a sign-up sheet was also circulated.
The section had 11 poster abstracts submitted and 9 accepted for this year’s annual
meeting.
There were 113 submissions for the 2014 New Investigator Awards and the section had
4 awardees: Klarissa Hardy (Lipscomb University), Patrice L. Jackson-Ayotunde
(University of Maryland Eastern Shore), Terry W. Moore (University of Illinois Chicago)
and Isaac T. Schiefer (University of Toledo).
Council of Sections activities: The COS has approved a Strategic Plan that each section
should use as a guide. The Chemistry section has an outline and it was recommended
that the incoming chair (David Colby) look at developing a full strategic plan. Robin
Zavod and Marc Harold served on a task force that is updating and expanding the 2007
Medicinal Chemistry Supplemental Educational Outcomes Statements for inclusion into
the 2013 Cape Outcomes report. A white paper has been started by the task force.
New Investigator Awards will be offered again this year. The section reminded abstract
reviewers to provide clear, constructive feedback that the applicants could use to
improve their submissions. As clarification, any abstract that answers “yes” to the
question “Are you using human studies?” needs to submit an IRB or it will be rejected
prior to review.
The full COS report will be placed on the AACP website.
6. Committee Reports
A. Program Committee (David Colby): A number of programs were offered by the
section at the Annual Meeting. The programming committee was able to offer some of these
sessions for CE credit. Dr. Bongsup Cho presented a session “Using 3D printing for Teaching in
the Pharmacy Curriculum” for CE credit. This session was well attended. The section is also
sponsoring a session entitled“New Investigator Awards Mini-Symposium” on Monday (July 28th)
afternoon. This will be the second year that three past NIA winners, Christopher Cunningham,
Eliud Hernandez and Albert Bowers, will present their research that was a result of this funding
opportunity.
B. Nominations Committee (Sid Andurkar): Two nominations for chair were solicited, Dr.
Wayne Childers (Temple University) and Dr. Marc Harold (Duquesne University). Biosketches
for both candidates will be distributed electronically.
C. Resolution Committee (Mike Adams) No report
D. Awards Committee (Victoria Roche): Victoria Roche thanked the other members of
the awards committee, Arthur Cox and Sandy Zito. The committee nominated Dr. John M.
Pezzuto for the AACP Volwiler Research Achievement Award and he was subsequently chosen
by AACP for this. He will receive this prestigious award during the Science Plenary and all
members were encouraged to attend. Also of note, the committee nominated Dr. Marc Harold
for the AACP Chalmers Distinguished Pharmacy Educator Award. The committee also
established an award in memory of Dr. James E. Wynn, an active mentor and chemistry section
member. The committee developed criteria and an evaluation rubric for selection. Nominations
were solicited and the inaugural recipient was chosen. Andy Coop of the University of Maryland
will be presented with the inaugural award at the end of this meeting.
Award Announcement:
AACP Chemistry Section Dr. James E. Wynn Memorial Award
The AACP Chemistry Section has established a Section Award to honor the memory of a
distinguished and cherished Section leader, Dr. James E. Wynn. Jim touched the lives of
everyone he met in a powerful way.
 He was a gifted teacher whose passion for pharmacy education and for students was
legendary.
 He was an inspirational leader whose positive energy elevated everyone around him.
He looked for the best in everybody, and gently facilitated his colleagues’ professional
growth in areas of strength they didn’t always know they had until Jim reached out to
mentor them.
 He was a visionary academic whose commitment to excellence in all things could not
be dissuaded by any obstacle or challenge. He made courageous choices, and treated
everyone (supporters and naysayers alike) with respect. His graciousness, diplomacy
and ever-present sense of humor could always be counted on to ease the way to
success.
 He was a kind and gentle man who genuinely cared for his colleagues and students.
He made others feel important and valued, and he viewed all who worked with him as
family. He had a unique ability to unite people around issues of importance.
 He was a true and trusted friend. No matter what his own work-related pressures, he
would always take time to listen thoughtfully to all who sought his counsel on resolving a
personal or professional problem, and help them find their way to a positive solution. He
celebrated your triumphs with genuine joy, and was always there to compassionately
see you through life’s difficult moments. He was a quiet, comforting and dependable
presence in good times and in bad. He gave people the gift of his strength and courage
simply by being there with them.

F. Supplemental CAPE outcomes revisions (Robin Zavod and Marc Harold): As reported
under COS activities, the section had two members on this task force. The task force has a goal
of re-writing the Chemistry Supplemental Outcomes 2007. Robin has sent out surveys on what
the members would like to keep or change from the 2007 Supplemental Outcomes and will send
out a final survey. The goal is to have new outcomes for the 2015 Annual Meeting.
7. New Business
A. Inaugural Dr. James E. Wynn Memorial Award
The James E. Wynn Memorial Award was created to recognize a member of the section who
possesses the same passion and priorities for pharmacy education that Jim Wynn had. These
include gifted teaching, positive energy, honor, visionary academic skills, genuine caring for
colleagues and strong mentoring for students. The award was presented by Dr. Wynn’s son,
William Wynn, who thanked the section for this tribute to his father. The inaugural recipient, Dr.
Andy Coop (University of Maryland), received the award plaque and thanked the section for the
