Teaching Timetable and Learning Outcomes for
Casley-Smith Specialist Skills Update and Development Course
22nd and 23rd March 2016
Course Aims
This course is intended to review and update Casley-Smith technique, MLD skills and
knowledge in peer review environment to share best practice. Also to review clinical
decision making at advanced practitioner/consultant lymphoedema therapist/nurse
level, using case studies as a learning framework.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of these two days the attendees will be able to:
 Demonstrate contemporary Casley-Smith technique of MLD including the
adaption of treatment plans for patients with complex lymphoedema or
advanced disease in the light of recent best evidence or changes to clinical
knowledge.
 Devise a multi-professional management programme for a lymphoedema
patient with multi-pathology or complex needs giving consideration to the latest
techniques and innovation
 Critically evaluate the role of the lymphoedema specialist with patients with rare
presentations
 Critically reflect on clinical practice problems and your own practice in managing
complex situations and in relation to relevant literature
 Discuss the use of ethical frameworks and the management of ethical issues and
their implications for practice
 Demonstrate the effective and sensitive communication and an interdisciplinary
approach in determining patient priorities and planning interventions to meet
the patient’s holistic needs
Teaching Methods:
Day 1: There will be some presentations but the day will mainly consist of practical
workshops in which the attendees should be prepared to participate. However, we do
understand that there are occasionally medical reasons why someone should not
participate as a model for their peers. If this is the case, please let us know before the
start of the course.
Day 2: The particular theme will be innovations and changing practice. The day aims
to expand the attendees’ knowledge of Specialist Practice through lively Case Study
Reviews of some of the most complex patients who attend lymphoedema clinics. A large
component of the day will be led by Denise Hardy, supported by Margaret-Anne Garner,
Yolande Borthwick and Rhian Noble-Jones. This day will explore the decision making
processes from detailed and technical assessments through to the specialist skills of
management.
