College of Medical, Veterinary & Life Sciences Nursing & Health Care School Teaching Timetable and Learning Outcomes for Casley-Smith Specialist Skills Update and Development Course 22nd and 23rd March 2016 Course Aims This course is intended to review and update Casley-Smith technique, MLD skills and knowledge in peer review environment to share best practice. Also to review clinical decision making at advanced practitioner/consultant lymphoedema therapist/nurse level, using case studies as a learning framework. Learning Outcomes At the end of these two days the attendees will be able to: Demonstrate contemporary Casley-Smith technique of MLD including the adaption of treatment plans for patients with complex lymphoedema or advanced disease in the light of recent best evidence or changes to clinical knowledge. Devise a multi-professional management programme for a lymphoedema patient with multi-pathology or complex needs giving consideration to the latest techniques and innovation Critically evaluate the role of the lymphoedema specialist with patients with rare presentations Critically reflect on clinical practice problems and your own practice in managing complex situations and in relation to relevant literature Discuss the use of ethical frameworks and the management of ethical issues and their implications for practice Demonstrate the effective and sensitive communication and an interdisciplinary approach in determining patient priorities and planning interventions to meet the patient’s holistic needs Teaching Methods: Day 1: There will be some presentations but the day will mainly consist of practical workshops in which the attendees should be prepared to participate. However, we do understand that there are occasionally medical reasons why someone should not participate as a model for their peers. If this is the case, please let us know before the start of the course. Day 2: The particular theme will be innovations and changing practice. The day aims to expand the attendees’ knowledge of Specialist Practice through lively Case Study Reviews of some of the most complex patients who attend lymphoedema clinics. A large component of the day will be led by Denise Hardy, supported by Margaret-Anne Garner, Yolande Borthwick and Rhian Noble-Jones. This day will explore the decision making processes from detailed and technical assessments through to the specialist skills of management.
