1. You will be responsible for knowing the following definitions:
addend – the number being added
sum – the answer in an addition problem
Label the following number sentences using the following terms (addend,

Commutative property – the order of addends does not change the sum.

change the sum.
Ex. 5 + (6 +7)

$12.26. How much did Sam spend in all?
The pet store had 300 bags of dog food. On Tuesday, the store sold 198 bags of food.
On Wednesday they sold 35 bags. How many bags of dog food did the store sell on
Tuesday and Wednesday?
On Sally’s farm there were 567 flowers that bloomed. On Jennifer’s farm there were
443 flowers that bloomed. On Erica’s farm there were 62 flowers that bloomed. How
many total flowers bloomed on Erica and Sally’s farms?
5. Estimation. Remember that estimation is a way to check for reasonableness.
You need to be able to estimate the sum. Remember, estimate to the largest place
value unless directions tell you otherwise.
